Larry Calufetti Obituary

Larry Calufetti, 65, founder and CEO of Sunshine Cleaning Systems succumbed to a lengthy illness on Monday surrounded by family and friends. "Larry was a man of faith with a big heart," said his wife, Dr. Lise Lambert-Calufetti. "He was a kind and loving husband and father with a compassionate, generous spirit. Even when he was ill, Larry always had a smile on his face. He will be missed by all of us and the community he served for 40 years." A native of Illinois, Larry was an All-American catcher for the Southern Illinois Salukis baseball team who competed in the College World Series and Pan American Games. Nicknamed "Moose" because of his large size, he joined the New York Mets' organization before a shoulder injury ended his baseball career. Larry came to Fort Lauderdale in the mid 1970s, and began coaching baseball at Broward Community College. At the same time he ran the valet parking operations at two of Broward's most memorable nightclubs, Pete & Lenny's and Christopher's. In 1976, Larry began cleaning store front windows in Lauderdale by the Sea. Thanks to Larry's determination, Sunshine grew quickly into becoming the state's largest and most successful window and janitorial company. Larry's motto was and still is, "We guarantee a brighter day!" Larry became a leader in the profession, serving as president of the International Window Cleaning Association (IWCA) throughout the United States. Larry's passion was helping others, he took tremendous pride in being able to help over a 1000 employees provide for their families. Larry also took great pride in serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes "FCA" in South Florida. He believed in giving back to the community as he supported many of the local charities in the communities where Sunshine lived and worked. "No matter how busy Larry was, he always took time to listen to me tell him about my day," said Lise, a family practice physician. "He also took time to talk with members of his cleaning team. They would turn to Larry for advice on anything in their lives." Larry's family was more important to him than anything else. He had two daughters, three step-daughters and five sisters. "He was the best Dad that any daughter could ask for," said daughter Jenna Auckland. " Daughter Erin Calufetti-Schumacher, said, "He was the best role model and taught us so much about life. Both Erin and Jenna agreed that their Dad was and will always be their HERO. His favorite song was 'Don't Worry - Be Happy,' and he showed that same spirit every day." He could often be seen driving around town in his vintage 1960 Firetruck with a huge smile on his face. Larry is survived by his wife, Dr. Lise Lambert Calufetti, his two daughters, Erin Calufetti-Schumacher (Kenneth), Jenna Auckland (Derek), and granddaughter, Parker Auckland; Three step-daughters, Jessica Moore (Jeff), Nathania Szczesny (David), Laurie Newlands (Gui) and step-grandchildren, Noah Moore, Lisette Moore, Nathan Szczesny and Liam Newlands. Larry is survived by his five sisters, Lynda Roper (Fred), Laura Coenen (Mike), Lisa Hamilton (Jim), Lana Soza (Robert), and Luci Maynard (Michael). Larry is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. The family will receive friends at Baird-Case Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home, 4343 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL. on Friday, February 5th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The memorial service to celebrate the life of Lawrence A. Calufetti will be held on Saturday, February 6, at 10 a.m. at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, 5555 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation http://support.themmrf.org/goto/teammoose , Fellowship of Christian Athletes- Broward Chapter, Broward College Foundation (memo: Larry Calufetti Memorial Fund) and 4Kids of South Florida.

Not sure what to say?

Coach Cal made a huge impact on my life in a short time. My favorite memory was in 1981 when the team stopped at a burger joint and Coach saw a young man not cleaning the windows properly. So, with a dip in his mouth along with his drawl he taught the young man how to properly clean a window. We all laughed but he did teach that young man a lesson...for free. I love you Coach!!

I too had the privilege of playing for Coach Cal in my years at Broward Community College. The first time I met him he scared the heck out of me. I thought wow this guy is tough. But it didn't take long to find out that behind that tough guy was a big teddy bear. Even if you did really mess up a play or throw to the wrong base he always had a smile for you after he gave you some grief. I especially enjoyed his speeches after the games. He knew how to motivate you and at the same time make you feel better about yourself. He will remain in my thoughts and prayers. For those of you who are part of his family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I just learned that my teammate, Moose, passed away from the recent issue if the SIU Alumni Magazine. My condolences to his family and friends. Larry was truly a one of a kind, special guy. We always had great times on our road trips. Larry and Dan Radison would serve as radio broadcasters on the plane rides home. Very funny and let it be known that no body was spared a little good natured ribbing from the broadcast duo. Larry made everyone feel like a starter. I know he will be missed. Rest in peace Moose.

I knew Moose thru Dan Radison. I did not spend a lot of time with Moose but then again he was the kind of person that impacted you in a positive way regardless of the amount of time spent with him. He is a great example for all that are wanting to have a positive influence in this life and all that are looking forward to eternity with Jesus. Praise God for Moose.

My deepest condolences to the Calufettis/Lamberts and their extended families. When a guy like Larry gets sick - even seriously - if you know him well, your initial reaction tends to be along the lines of, "It's Larry for heaven's sake. He'll be fine!" He was someone who constantly put out the feeling that everything will always be fine, because he really believed it (and made so many others believe it too).
One of my favorite Larry stories (and boy, did he have a lot of good ones!) was about how he was out of the country on a trip with his baseball team, back when he was still playing baseball. While most of his teammates were partying and having a good time on one of their last nights before heading home, Larry actually took it upon himself to go around collecting all of his teammates' foreign currency, because he figured they'd be unlikely to use it all before they left (and if not, would probably lose it once they returned). So Larry being Larry, he takes all of the collected money and approaches one of the humble service staff at their hotel (whose job role was akin to a janitor, or similar), and gives him all of the money. The man was so shocked he nearly fainted, because Larry had just given him more money than he'd ever touched with his own hands in his entire life. THAT is the kind of guy Larry was. It's a shame that men like him do not get to spend more time here with the rest of us, teaching us how to be better people. Cheers, Moose.

Dear Lise-

My deepest condolences to you and your family.

As a young coach Coach Cal taught his BCC players how to be men and respect the game. He loved us like sons and we all loved, respected him, and wanted to be like him. His saying was " you can if you think you can" and he and coach Rad painted it on the left field wall at BCC stadium. Many of us inscribed it inside our caps. Always looked out for his players helping to get us into colleges and pro contracts. And later he did the same in caring for his employees. Honest, caring and giving. Great family man. Great man. Gone but never forgotten.

I had the distinct honor of playing baseball and working for Larry Moose Calufetti.
I first met Moose as a college freshman and played baseball for him for two years at Broward College formerly Broward Community College. I had no money, no direction and it would have been tough to attend college, pay for classes, books, food and survive. Moose was generous enough to give me a baseball scholarship and all those cost were paid by the school.
Almost every day after baseball practice, Moose and I would go to Carvel Ice Cream for Pralines & Cream' in his huge older white on white 4-door Cadillac convertible. We each got a quart of ice cream, and spent time speaking about life, baseball and work.
I worked for Moose several years cleaning windows for Sunshine Windows Cleaning and valeting cars at Pete & Lenny's. His honesty, integrity and work ethic were unrivaled and rubbed off on me
Moose was a father figure, mentor, and gave me the most important advice back in my late teens when I needed it most that shaped my life to this day. My honesty, integrity and work ethic was in a large part shaped directly from my association with Moose. I am profoundly privileged to have met such a wonderful caring man.
If ever one needed a great big hero in life, Moose fit the bill.
My sincere heartfelt condolences to the entire Calufetti Moose family and friends, we should all feel grateful to have a champion in our lives and the contributions Moose made to impressionable people like me continue to this day.
