Richard Burt Obituary

Richard Thompson Burt, 86, a longtime resident of Lighthouse Point, Fl (Broward) peacefully passed away at home Dec. 5th, 2022 as the sun was rising.

Richard was born on November 16, 1936 in Tulsa, OK.

In 1952, the Burt family moved to Pompano Beach, FL where Richard quickly fell in love with the ocean, becoming an avid sportsman enjoying scuba diving and deep sea fishing. A high school job as a photographer's assistant sparked his love of photography preferring to photograph wildlife over hunting. He excelled in football and track and field during his high school years becoming quite an athlete.

After graduating from Pompano Beach High School, he studied agriculture at Florida Southern College and joined the Army ROTC Program. After Graduation he received an Army commission and was stationed at Fort Bragg, assigned to the Quartermaster Core. His team oversaw the massive deployment of both men and equipment to South Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After his service in the Army, he worked for Texaco in Jacksonville, FL and then returned to South Florida where he earned a Master's Degree from FAU and began his 40 year career as a Financial Advisor. Richard loved to collect nautical antiques, play volleyball at his local park and lobster with family in his beloved Keys.

Richard Thompson Burt is predeceased by his father, Walter Thompson who died in 1938-His parents Dr. John E. Burt and Helen Rose Burt- sister Carolyn Francis Cerney (Walter). He is survived by his sister Cheryl Burt Wade and brother John E. Burt III (Cindy). Richard has many nieces and nephews rounding out his family.

His favorite saying: "friends and family, that's all there is" sums up his life of many long friendships and love of his family. He shall certainly be missed.

A January service will be planned.

I am sorry to read this. Richard was my friend at Florida Southern when I was there for my freshman year. I will post an old picture when I find it. My sincere condolences to his family.
