Roger Stanway Obituary

Stanway, Roger Geddes, age 70, passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Hollywood Memorial Hospital. Roger was born in New York on May 29, 1942, and was raised in California. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Roger attended college and law school at the University of Nebraska, from which he graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1968. He practiced law in Nebraska until coming to Hollywood, Florida in 1973. He maintained his license to practice law in Nebraska, and he was also licensed to practice law in the states of California and New York. Because of his untimely death, it cannot be said that Roger Stanway had "done it all." He did not retire to California. He never took a week off to take his wife Debra "to see the Rolling Stones in Rome." Actually, he rarely took a day off. Yet, in his 70 years, Roger Stanway completely accomplished certain things. He was completely dedicated to Debra Stanway, his wife of thirty-seven years. As one of Hollywood's leading family law and civil trial lawyers, Roger accomplished complete dedication to his craft. This was because, at his core, he believed in helping, as much as he possibly could, the thousands of everyday men and women who came to him in their time of legal need. In connection with the Florida Lawyers Assistance program, Roger was a recipient of the 2004 Peggy Kilby Award. He remained actively available to attorneys, judges, law students, and nearly anyone who needed his help to overcome impairments due to depression, stress, alcoholism, and chemical dependency. In so doing, Roger Stanway helped save careers, and helped countless fellow attorneys and members of our community. He measured his own success in life by how well he treated others. Consequently, his devotion to his clients, friends and family endeared Roger to them and he enjoyed relationships that lasted throughout his lifetime. He is survived by his loving wife Debra of 37 years; his daughters Katrina and Jennifer; five grandchildren; step-sister Heather Russell and her husband John; step-brother Clarke Stanway and his wife Jean; step-brothers Mark and Gregg Stanway; sister-in-law Janis Dye and her husband Larry; many nieces and nephews, and his goddaughter Madison. Also left behind is Roger's faithful pet and best friend, Gracie. Visitation of family and friends will be held Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 6 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church: 1704 Buchanan St., Hollywood, FL, (954)921-3721. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that one might consider a memorial gift to the Humane Society of Broward County, 2070 Griffin Rd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312 or to St. John's Episcopal Church: 1704 Buchanan St., Hollywood, FL 33020. Arrangements by LANDMARK Funeral Home, 4200 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, FL 33021, 954-989-8220.

Mrs. Stanway my deepest thoughts to you and your family. Roger and I met many years ago when I worked for Donny's Auto Bodys Repair Shop. I stayed in touch with Roger for his advice years after. My husband & I came to him with a very difficult situation. Roger never stopped trying to help us. It was not to long ago he sent me some more info that might help my husband who lives in Trinidad with his daughters case. I want to say he was always trying to figure a way. He will be missed!

Debra, I am still in shock over Roger's death. I get choked up every time I read one of the new entries in the guest book which contain such an outpouring of love and respect for the man you married. I above all know that Roger would say his life would have amounted to nothing without you by his side. I am so sorry i could not make it from Tallahassee to Hollywood for the service but I did not know until Jamie called me the day before. More than anything i wanted to give you a big hug and cry just a little with you. Please hang in there an know that you are loved by all of us who loved Roger and will be in our prayers. If there is anything I can do to help you with the office matters, please let me know.

I first met Roger in 1984 when he hired me as his law Clerk and where I worked throughout law school. Later I worked for a firm in which Roger was of counsel for 5 years. When the firm broke up I moved down the street and rented space from Jay Spechler who owned a building with Roger at the time. Jay moved on the County Court Judge. I attribute my knowledge of the "PRACTICE" of law to Roger. Roger had a very diverse practice on every area of the law. He had a unique fondness for family law. Over the years we worked on cases and collaborated. Roger was on of the most ethical attorneys I have ever met. His stories of the old Hollywood days were the greatest. He worked with such jurists as Judge Leonard Fleet, Judge Tom Lynch, Jay Spechler and others. I obtained my love of mini Schnauzers from Roger. I have 2 minis. We would have the dogs in the office most days. Roger took the California and New York bars in his late 40s and passed the first time. He always spoke for as long as I knew him of retiring to California but he just kept on working. He was my mentor and he will be truly missed. My sympathies go to his wife Debra and the rest of his Family. Rest In Peace my friend.

Roger's untimely passing is a great loss to me personally like so many others I considered him, a role model, mentor and friend. I had the pleasure of knowing Roger for 20 years and even practicing with him in his Hollywood office for a few years. In a word Roger is IRREPLACEABLE. Vince LoCurto.

Although 70 years of age, I always thought of Roger as in his 50's ! He seemed to be the picture of health. Roger inspired and helped so many in getting their lives and careers back in order. He was humble, he was steadfast and he practiced law with meticulous professionalism and devotion. He adored and loved so much his wife Debra. He doted on his dog Gracie and she held much of his heart in her paws. He was a rock solid friend who spoke the truth. We are fortunate to have had Roger in our lives for so many years. We are so sad that we will not see him again, but richer for his love and friendship. Let us make the most of each day, as Roger did.

Few men lived their lives as a servant and advocate to their bretheren. Mr. Stanway spent his life helping others & the world was a better place with him in it. The Thomas/Blevins family will miss him dearly...WE LOVE YOU!!

My deepest sympathies to the Stanway family during this difficult time. Roger was an excellent lawyer and a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. His style brought back memories of when a person's handshake meant their word. Our community lost a first-class person and lawyer.
Rest in peace.

So sorry to hear that Roger had passed. I can still see him carving the turkey at the St Francis Christmas dinner. We will miss his help and support.

The first thing I thought of was his wife, Debra. If you ever had the chance to see Roger and Debra together you would clearly see how strong their love for each other was. I don't think I ever had a conversation with Roger where he didn't mention Debra in some way. She was clearly the most important part of his life. It was so nice to see.

God Bless both Roger and Debra

Roger was an outstanding attorney and a true gentleman. I first met Roger as an "opposing counsel" and I only knew Roger through the legal system, but I developed a tremendous amount of respect for the way he practiced law and treated others. Roger will truly be missed in the Courthouse hallways. God bless you, and go Huskers!
