ROY CHARLES SCHWARTZ
March 31, 1947- August 23, 2004
He is six and so am I. We throw stones at each other across a narrow street, never hitting the target. I know his birthday, he knows mine.  I know his middle name.
We both have younger sisters and ignore them as best we can. He plays the clarinet, is a master at scrabble, cheats at cards, and talks too much. I watch and laugh, laugh a lot.
We survive the pre-teens one grade at a time, in a grammar school with slate steps, and real blackboards. We play baseball under the chestnut trees at the train station. We wade into the bay and drag horseshoe crabs onto the beach. We live in Keyport, and we think it´s paradise.
We attend different colleges, we make different friends. He makes the drive to Pittsburgh, sits on my couch and we re-live two decades of history in a millisecond. I listen and laugh, laugh a lot.
Then it´s my turn. Fifty-six hours of driving to visit an old friend. Can this really be Mexico, am I really here. Guadalajara changes him...not at all. We take turns telling jokes and I laugh, laugh a lot.
He becomes the Florida swipe card doctor with a plan, always a plan. He knows the genes, his DNA, are against him. He can do the exercise, just not the diet. Then it´s a bout with gout; a bypass, or two or three.
He is only fifty-seven years old and Roy is dead. There is no more last get together, there is no more Roy. It has been twenty years. Who will tell the next joke, who will lead the laughter?

My sincerest condolences to your family. What a shocking loss of a really good guy!

Dr. Schwartz had been my physician for over 20 years. We became friends and shared additional connections in that we both grew up in the same area of NJ and appeared that we had a lot in common.

He will be greatly missed.
