Saul Geronemus Obituary

Geronemus DDS, Dr. Saul A., of Tamarac, FL, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2010; he was 95 years old. Born October 4, 1914, in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Geronemus has been a resident of South Florida since 1947. He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Helen; his wife, Adele; and his brother, Clement. Dr. Geronemus is survived by sons Richard (Faye) and Leonard (Pamela); his grandchildren Adam (Mara), Melanie (Kees) Smit, Hillary (Tom) Truslow, Michael, Lisa (Ryan) Goodkin, and Todd; his two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Zachary; his brother, Alfred (Terry); and his sister-in-law, Berle. Dr. Geronemus was a graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn, New York (1931), Syracuse University (1936, Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity), and New York University College of Dentistry (1940). He was also a physiology Teaching Fellow at New York University (1942 to 1943). Dr. Geronemus served as a dentist in the United States Army Air Corps, stationed at Boca Raton Army Air Field from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of Major. He practiced dentistry in Fort Lauderdale from 1947 to 1995. He was the president of the Broward County Dental Society from 1954 to 1955, a life member of the American Dental Association, and president of Temple Emanu-El of Ft. Lauderdale from 1960 to 1962. Among his many accomplishments he was an instrumental advocate of flouridation of the Fort Lauderdale public water supply and was a pioneer in preventative dentistry for children. He loved golf and had the experience of a lifetime, playing in a foursome with Bob Hope and Arnold Palmer in the 1973 Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic. Service will be held at 11:45 a.m., Wednesday at Star of David Memorial Gardens, 7701 Bailey Rd., N. Lauderdale, 954-722-9000. Dr. Geronemus was my first dentist back in the 50's. His son, Richard and myself use to play together. He was a kind and gentle man. RIP.
