St. George Grinnan Obituary

St. George Tucker Grinnan III died at his home on September 2, 2017. Tucker was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 20, 1937. He was the only son and oldest child of St. George Tucker Grinnan Jr. and Sadie Grymes Grinnan. His parents, his sister (Catherine), and a daughter (Kate) preceded him in death. Tucker graduated from St. Christopher's School, the University of Virginia, and Harvard Business School. He was a lifelong-learner and, with his wife Elizabeth Edmunds Grinnan (Betty), took classes, went to concerts, visited museums, and traveled the world. He read prodigiously and one had to work hard to find a topic about which he wasn't well-informed. He and Betty were married almost 60 years. They met when they were both 16 and, in the course of their life together, lived first in Europe, where Tucker was in the Army, and then all over America as Tucker climbed the corporate ladder. They moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1977 and, once there, hosted a steady stream of friends and family from all over the globe. Tucker's conversational skills (and Betty's cooking) are legendary and dinner at their home was an experience none forgot and almost all enjoyed. Tucker is survived by Betty, his four children--Dabney Grinnan (Dr. Greg Ruff), Tuck Grinnan (Lee Strauss), Tom Grinnan (Marybeth Grinnan), Sarah Ehlers (Dr. Ben Ehlers), and twelve grandchildren. His family will miss him terribly. A celebration of his life will take place later this month in Boca Raton, Florida. Contributions to his memory may be made to the Florence Fuller Child Development Center in Boca Raton.

Tucker and Betty befriended me at the beginning of my 20 year life as an Army wife in Dachau, Germany, 1960-1962. Their kindness brought comfort and warmth during those cold German winters. I lost track of them years ago and it was my loss. I am saddened to learn that tucker has passed on but I do hope that somehow I can reunite with Betty so we can relive some of those memories.
