Thomas Truex Obituary

Thomas Alan Truex, 64, of Davie, passed away on November 17, 2022 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2022 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, Davie, Florida.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Community Church of Davie with the Reverend Diane Gutierrez officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens.

Tom was born in Elkhart, Indiana to Lloyd and Barbara Truex on December 4, 1957. He moved to Miramar, Florida and graduated as valedictorian of Miramar High School in 1976. He graduated from the University of Florida College of Law in 1981.

He married Janet on August 18, 1984 at Davie United Methodist Church. He worked as a lawyer for over 30 years, a majority of them at his own law firm. He spent four years as church administrator for Christ the Rock Community Church before working as a world history teacher at Western High School, where he retired after the 2021-2022 school year.

Tom was a valued member of the Davie community, serving as Town Council Member from 2001-2003 and Mayor from 2003-2009. He also served as a board member of the E.A.S.E. Foundation, Inc., and was a member of the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce. Tom was a very generous person and spent significant time and effort serving various local charities over the course of his career.

Tom loved God and sought to help others know Him better too. He read the complete Bible every year and spent hours each week preparing a lesson for his Saturday morning Men's Bible Study. He was also very involved in church over the years, serving as a Sunday School Teacher and Men's Bible Study leader.

Among Tom's finest achievements is the happy life he built for his family. He was a friend to all and will be greatly missed.

Tom is survived by his wife, Janet, their four daughters Ellen (Charlie), Angela (Ryan), Deborah (Gianluca), and Joy (Charles). He is also survived by his parents Lloyd and Barbara Truex, siblings Deborah (Dave), Theodore (Linda), Deanna (George), Terry (Brandy), parents-in-law Richard and Ethel Postlethwaite, and his grandson Abel.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the John & Vera Mae Perkins Foundation, P.O. Box 10773, Jackson, MS 39289.

I was recently made aware of Tom´s passing. I moved from FL to CT a few years ago which is why I didn´t hear right away. This is just awful to say the least. Tom was so kind hearted. He was a great leader and he will be dearly missed.

Janet and family. I was incredibly shocked to read of Tom´s passing. Tom never gave it a second thought when I needed legal advice or if I referred a case to him. I remember he and I got our backs broken playing in a basketball game. I pray you are all well and I will never forget Tom and his graciousness. God loves you all. Bruce Merles

Janet, I was sad to hear of Tom's passing. My condolences to you and the girls. I worked with your girls at Davie Elementary in the Gifted Program. They spoke often of you and Tom and it was clear how much they loved you both. May God watch over you and guide you through this difficult time.

I am so incredibly sorry to hear of Tom's passing. What a tremendous loss. Tom was one of the most generous and selfless people I know. Janet, I will never forget when you and Tom prayed over me in his office when I was diagnosed with cancer. I still get emotional when I think of that memory. You both have been an important part of my life. I pray that you find peace and comfort in such a difficult time. Know that Tom is watching over you and the family, and will live on in your hearts and memories forever. Cherie

Janet, I am so sorry to hear about Tom´s passing. As I look at the clock, you are at the visitation service. I am praying for you and your daughters. I pray God will hold you in his loving arms and be your strength as you find your new normal. I have a lot of fond memories of you and Tom in our younger years in Davie. May Gods be with you all.

Tom was an champion for the cause of Christ in our community, in politics, in the workplace, in his support of Christian charities, in Bible studies, with his friends, and in his family life. Tom used his influence to actively support important local Christian organizations like Hope Pregnancy, Firewall Ministries, Teen Challenge, and Sheraton House Ministries. While in public office (and before and after) Tom proudly held weekly men's Bible studies and prayed in local restaurants. Tom read through the Bible every year, as noted above, but he also encouraged others to do the same, an example I have followed for many years now. But Tom's greatest legacy is the family he leaves behind - his devout wife, Janet, and four beautiful daughters, who, alongside their husbands, are are all serving Christ and will certainly follow their Dad right into heaven someday. Tom's passing is a terrible loss. May God raise up others who will follow his Godly example.

Janet, I remember when you met Tom and when you fell in love. I was the fortunate teenager that got to drive to Davie UMC youth group with you. Tom was super sweet and always a gentleman. Prayers for you and your family Janet.
