William Abbate Obituary

Abbate, William S., 74, of Boca Raton, FL passed away April 19, 2011. He was the beloved husband for 23 years to Susan P. Abbate; son of Frences C. Abbate; loving father to Frances Jacks and her husband Louis Jacks, her children Michelle, Louis, and Amanda, Ronald Abbate and his children Jackie Abbate Wood, (a great-grandchild, Madison), Doreeg Debra, Christopher, and Robert; Lisa McLoughlin and her children, Joseph, Christopher and Daniel. Daughter-in-law Ann Abbate; brother Ronald Abbate, sister-in-law Doris Abbate. Bill was President and CEO of Structural Display Inc. taken over from his father Ronald Abbate. With his charm, wit and determination he brought the company uo to a multimillion dollar business with innovative design, a great manufacturing facility with the best employees he could find. He treated his staff with kindness and generosity. Many stayed at SDI for several years since it became a second home. Bill was very interested in antique cars and was a member of many car clubs. His last car was a 1932 Packard Roadster Coupe, which he sold only a few days prior to passing. He and his wife Susan also enjoyed boating and took several trips before his health deteriorated. He traveled with Susan to many countries, but after 9/11 decided to see more of America. They tried to visit as many states as possible, and enjoyed meeting people along the way. He was the life of every party and loved to dance, tell jokes with various dialects making everyone laugh till their sides hurt. He was always the first to help his family and circle of friends-always lending a helping hand with no strings attached. If there was a story on the news about someone having hard times, he was the first to call the station with a donation. The lady who had no place to live, a veteran who tried to keep afloat, a clinic that needed donations to keep going, all the major charities were recipients of extreemly large donations. If a church needed a chalice, he would always send them a check. He was larger than life and this gentle soul touched the lives of everyone privileged to know him. He will be greatly missed. Donations in his memory can be made to the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association. Services will be Thurs. Apr. 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Gardens Memorial Park, 4103 N. Military Trail, Boca Raton 3343L, 561-989-9190. Arrangements by Riverside-Gordon Kendall.

Cousin Bill was one of the kindest people I know. On the first day of my father's wake, my mother, my husband, my three daughters and myself were approaching the funeral parlor at 12:30pm - about one half hour before the wake was to begin. Suddenly from across the street I saw Bill running toward us. When he reached our side of the street, he said to my husband, "I thought you might need another man with you today". He then took my arm and the hand of one of my daughters and accompanied us all inside. He had driven all the way from Long Island, N.Y. to Fort Lee, N.J. and waited (I have no idea how long) for us to arrive. He told no one of his plan - just showed up and stayed with us for the entire afternoon. I have never forgotten, and will always be grateful for this wonderful act of kindness.
