William Dawson Obituary

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – William Floyd "Bill" Dawson passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Holy Cross Health – Ft. Lauderdale. He was born December 1, 1930, in Bramwell, WV, to the late John Rages and Sadie Doss Dawson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Rages Lee "Jack" Dawson; Curtis Hampton "Buddy" Dawson; James Robert "Buzzy" Dawson; sister Betty Haskew; brothers-in-law, Dr. John J. "Jack" Mahood, Denver M. Stoker, and Elmer Bay; sisters-in law Garnet Lee Dawson, Patricia "Patty" Dawson, and Julia "Judy" Dawson, and nephews Darwin "Chuck" Dawson, Leslie "Butch" Dawson, and John R. "Jackie" Dawson. Bill is survived by daughter Renee Dawson of Greenville, NC, sisters Louise Dawson Stoker of Bramwell, WV and Norma Mahood Bay of Bluefield, VA; brother-in-law Ralph "Doc" Haskew of Tampa and sister-in-law Connie Dawson Dushane. Uncle Billy also leaves many dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will cherish their memories of tales of his travels and adventures, limitless jokes, and the changing story of how he lost part of his little finger.

Bill served in the US Navy for 20 years before retiring. During this time, he was stationed in many areas of the world including Iceland and Pakistan as well as Hawaii. He served on several submarines, including the USS Robert E. Lee, one of the first nuclear submarines. Following his Navy career, he worked for many years as a private boat captain and obtained his Master Captains license. He served as an expert witness in many boating accident cases.

His interests included boating, travel, gardening, cooking, crosswords, and enjoying the company of his many friends. He was a loyal friend who never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and his ability to find humor in situations made him light up a room. His zest for life touched all who met him.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a future date.

Dear family and friends of Bill,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Bill´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor in the U.S. Submarine Force, including on the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601).
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.
