Arthur Mullins

Dr. Arthur Wiley Mullins, age 83, of the Compton Mountain section of Buchanan County, VA, passed away peacefully Friday, June 28, 2024, in Pikeville Medical Center, KY.
Arthur was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cass and Mary Mullins; parents, Wiley and Patsy Mae Breeden Mullins; sister, Eleanor and husband Ralph Maggard; and one nephew, Terry Maggard.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Maxine Mullins, of the home; and their son, Shaun Mullins and wife Billie, of Dandridge, TN.
Arthur's schooling included five grades at Mullins Mountain Elementary school on Compton Mountain, Whitewood Elementary/High school, and graduate of Grundy Senior High school in 1958. He then graduated from Pikeville College, Radford University, and Virginia Tech with a Doctor of Education in 1993.
He was a founding member and Elder of Flatwoods Church of Christ of Compton Mountain. He was a teller of "true" stories and a lover of the great outdoors. One of Arthur's greatest accomplishments was thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1996.
Arthur worked for Buchanan County Public Schools, beginning his teaching career at the Little Red School House in Jewell Valley then moving on to Whitewood High school before becoming principal of the Buchanan County Vocational School and retiring in 1991.
Arthur was a member of the Masonic Lodge #318 AF&AM, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #104, Richlands, VA, and Florence Ann Chapter #133, Grundy, VA, and served as Worthy Grand Patron of the Order of Eastern Star in Virginia in 2021 to 2022, and was a member the Boy Scouts of America for 60 years. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Appalachian College of Pharmacy of Oakwood, VA.
The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, VA, from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, with Masonic and Eastern Star service beginning at 7 p.m., with Brother Robert Rife officiating. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, VA, preachers Stevie White and Dennis Wimmer officiating. He will be laid to rest at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
