Charles Miller Obituary

Charles Miller

January 26, 1934 - January 29, 2025

Charles William Miller, 91, of Rural Retreat, Va., peacefully passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, after a long and fulfilling life. Charles was born on January 26, 1934, in Crockett, Va., on a cold January day to Roy M. Miller, Sr. and Katherine Cline Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Helen Rhodes Miller. Also, preceding him in death are his parents and one brother, Roy Winton Miller, Jr.; sister, Patsye Miller Hawthorne; and half sister, Mary Heldreth Foglesong.

Surviving Mr. Miller are two sons and daughters in law, SFC (R) Darrell B. MIller (Melody), LTC (R) Etthan C. Miller (Karen); and one daughter and son in law, Janice M. Widner (Allen). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Matthew Miller (Melinda), Elizabeth Widner, Lauren M. Boothe (Chris), Kassidy Brown, Karli Miller, Emily Widner, and Eden Miller. Two step-grandsons, Jacob Deane (Mackenzie) and Ethan Deane, also survive. As well, four great- grandchildren, Dalton Miller, Arabella Miller, Gabriel Bryant, and Malachi Brown; two sisters, Frances M. Walters and Elizabeth M. Shelton, survive as well as one sister-in-law, Mary P. Rhodes.

Charles loved nothing more than to be outside working all of his life. He enjoyed farming with either sheep or cattle and he built numerous homes throughout Wythe and Smyth Counties. He was out riding his tractor, mowing and weed eating well into his late 80s. Once he was forced to spend more time inside, he never saw a Western Movie that he didn't like.

Mr. Miller lived a good solid life of hard work. He was a man of few words, but the words he did say had meaning and wisdom. We lost our most beloved dad, but many people lost a good and loyal friend who was known to help anyone that ever asked. On the final part of his journey, the family would like to thank everyone who helped him live his final days in the way he wanted.

Funeral services will be held at Lindsey's Funeral Home in Rural Retreat, VA, on Saturday February 1, 2025, with visitation at noon until 2 p.m. and the funeral starting at 2 p.m. Services will be conducted by Mark Noel. Burial will follow at Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery in Rural Retreat.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery or the Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Terry Hawkins, Ethan Deane, David Hall, Matthew Heldreth, Matthew Miller, and Mike Davis.

Honorary pallbearers are Larry Arnold, Don Heldreth, and Stanley King, Jr.
