Geri Lynn Flanary
January 25, 1962 - April 30, 2021
Geri Lynn Flanary, age 59, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was called to be with her Lord on April 30, 2021, following a brief illness.
Geri was born and raised in Richlands, Virginia and graduated from Richlands High School in 1980. She earned a Bachelor's Degrees from both Longwood College and Virginia Commonwealth University. She earned a Master's Degree in Education from Georgia State and an Education Specialist Degree from Piedmont College in Georgia. While a student at Longwood College, she was president of the Delta Zeta Sorority whose creed says, in part, "To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, May I give graciously of what is mine." Geri was a beloved and award-winning history teacher and the head of the Social Studies Department at Duluth High School in Duluth, Georgia. She never married nor had children but loved all her students as her own, mentoring a great number to prestigious universities and great life accomplishments.
Among those who preceded her in passing are her parents, Richard and Betty Flanary, and her grandfather, Richlands icon Guy Flanary, for whom a Richlands Little League field is named. Geri is survived by her longtime partner, Jim Mullins, also formerly of Richlands and her stepdaughter, Emily Mullins. She is also survived by her brothers, Richard Flanary Jr of Jalisco, Mexico, his wife, Magdalena, and their children, James and Allison, Mike Flanary of Roanoke, Va, his wife, Ashlee, and their children, Cael, Blake, and Harper.
At Duluth High School, Geri was also the leader of the Care Team. Using public donations, this organization comes to the aid of students whose families are experiencing financial crisis. This help comes in the form of free eye glasses, school supplies, or even something to eat. A graveside service for Geri Lynn Flanary was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at Hankins Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia, with the Rev. Mark Jones officiating. Relatives and friends served as pallbearers. Those wishing to attend the graveside service were asked to line up at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
