Lillian "Mama" Hall Moore
October 16, 1950 - November 11, 2025
Lillian "Mama" Hall Moore, 75, of Wytheville, VA, passed away peacefully with her devoted husband, Gary, by her side. Known affectionately as "Mama Moore," she dedicated her life to teaching, coaching, and inspiring generations of students at George Wythe High School.
Born in Fort Eustis, VA, Lillian was the daughter of the late James and Helga Hall. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James W. Hall Jr.; father-in-law, Clarence L. Moore; and mother-in-law, Betty Sue Moore.
She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 53 years, Gary C. Moore; brothers, Bobby Hall, Terry Hall, David Hall (and his partner, Holly Crase), and Daniel Hall; sisters, Dorothy Atkins (John), Phyllis Burcham (Andy), Linda Hagee, and Valerie Hall; sister-in-law, Kathy Abel Hall; and members of her extended Moore family, Patsy Moore Thomas, David G. Moore, and Jeffrey D. Moore.
A proud resident of Wytheville, Lillian devoted her career to the students and athletes of George Wythe High School, where she was known for her high expectations, fierce dedication, and caring heart. She mentored thousands of young people, teaching them not only how to compete but how to believe in themselves and work hard toward their goals.
A member of the Virginia High School League Coaches Hall of Fame, Coach Moore's record speaks to her excellence:
Volleyball: 12 District Championships, 8 Regional Championships, 2 State Runners-Up, 4 State Championships
Girls Track: 5 District Championships, 3 Regional Championships, 1 State Runner-Up, 2 State Championships
Though she had no biological children, "Mama Moore" was a mother to countless students and athletes whose lives she forever changed. Her light will continue to shine through those left behind.
A celebration of her life will be held at Grubb Funeral Home on Saturday, November 15th, viewing from 12 noon to 2 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Burial to follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
