James Steves Obituary

James W. Steves
October 14, 2024
James W Steves, 72, a lifelong resident of Syracuse, New York and a 1969 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 14, 2024.
He was the loving husband of Debbie for over 50 years. Their love of travel included frequent trips to the Adirondacks, visits to Ireland, and countless time on the road attending their three children's college sporting events. Over many years, Debbie followed him to all his races including stops in Philadelphia and Ottawa, cheering on as he completed multiple marathons. At home, he regularly participated in the Boilermaker Road Race and the Mountain Goat Run, volunteering out on the course when he could no longer compete.
He spent his career in the life insurance industry, retiring as Managing Director, Agency Sales at Cadaret, Grant & Co., but his real life's work was driven by his unfailing faith in Jesus Christ. He was committed to serving his community, and did so with love and great humility in numerous roles. "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10.
Jimmy had a calling as a gifted speaker to teach the word of God. Most recently he did so with the Citadel Corps Worship Community through the Salvation Army. In addition to preaching on Sunday mornings, he was a dedicated teacher of bible study. You didn't have to attend a church service to hear his message which was often centered on love, gratitude, and compassion. He cherished the opportunities to officiate a wedding, deliver a eulogy, or simply offer prayer before a family meal.
He had the opportunity to impact the lives of many young men through the game of basketball, coaching at Holy Cross and later Saint Lucy's for almost twenty years. The relationships formed with many families led to lifelong friendships and continued mentorship. It was common for Jimmy to attend high school graduations, write college reference letters, and attend weddings of former players. As an avid sports fan, he was a Yankees enthusiast and regularly attended Syracuse Orange sporting events on the hill. It was however the countless road trips with his best friends that he cherished most. One of their favorite destinations was the Lacrosse Championship. He treasured their friendship.
Later in life, his pride and joy were his grandchildren; Collin, Natalie, Lydia, Lucas, and Adam. He was their biggest supporter and a constant presence at all school concerts, swim meets, cross country races, soccer, and basketball games. His attendance and encouragement will be greatly missed.
He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Katherine Steves, his brother Bob, and sister Margaret Gaurino. He is survived by his wife Debbie, children Kelli Walker (Chris), Brian (Carrie), and Michael (Jasmine Maimone). He is also survived by his siblings Mary, Helen, Eloise Smarrelli (John), Theresa Vaga (Walter), Elizabeth Forgays, Thomas (Debra), John (Diane), and Daniel (Judy), in-laws James Guarino and Kathy Steves, five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews he cared for dearly.
The family would like to thank the nurses in the MICU at St. Joseph's Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Lucy's Athletic Ministry, 432 Gifford Street, Syracuse, NY. To continue Jimmy's legacy of service, please consider volunteering in your community.
