Robert L. Neimeier, 84, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Saturday at Crouse Hospital, surrounded by his family.
A lifelong resident of the Syracuse area, Bob was a proud graduate of North High School. He dedicated over 41 years of his career to Carrier Corporation, where he worked as a skilled sheet metal press machinist. Following his retirement, Bob remained active in his community, spending more than 25 years as caretaker/mentor/historical advisor at the Fairmount Fire Department (FFD)-a place that meant a great deal to him.
Bob was a dedicated volunteer firefighter. In 1962, he joined the Brewerton Fire Department, followed by joining Fairmount in 1972. He was 1986 Firefighter of the Year, became a life member in 1993, and received the Clark Motondo Dedication Award in 2017. Bob was a charter member of the world renowned Fairmount Fire Department Morning Coffee Club. His constant presence at Fairmount and laugh will be forever missed.
Bob was a devoted communicant of Holy Family Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. He had a deep passion for automobiles and was known as a lifelong car enthusiast. Some of his happiest memories were made during 25 summers spent at Brennan's Beach, where he enjoyed the company of family and friends. A lifelong dog owner, Bob found great companionship and comfort in his beloved pets throughout the years.
In his leisure time, Bob found joy in woodworking, splitting firewood and sharing it, bowling, fishing, taking long dog walks on the Erie Canal, and driving his classic cars. He especially enjoyed his monthly breakfast with Carrier retirees. But nothing brought him greater happiness than his grandchildren. He took immense pride in attending and supporting their activities, especially dancing, basketball, and hockey. His love and encouragement will be remembered always.
Bob was predeceased by his father, Robert Neimeier; mother and stepfather, Louise and Wilbur Hudson; and sister, Joan Schenfield.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Margaret (Savo); sons, Rob (Robin) and Eric, both of Camillus; daughter-in-law, Denise Neimeier; grandchildren, Hanna, Julia, Lucy, Max and Joey; sisters, Dorothy Huntley of Central Square and Beverly Stanton of Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews.
