Martha Johansen Obituary

Martha Amby Johansen
March 16, 1919 - March 4, 2012
Martha Amby Johansen was born in Merriman, Nebraska to James and Margaret Herrington. At the age of 18 Martha came with her parents to visit an uncle who lived in Fredensborg Canyon. Martha decided to stay in California, finding work as a nanny and waitress. She also gave a lot of time helping with her children's school classes, Boy Scouts, Brownies, 4-H, Church, School PTA, and teaching Sunday school.
Martha passed away Sunday, March 4th, at her home in Buellton where she lived since her marriage to Peter Amby in 1939. Martha led an active life doing volunteer work at Elverhoy Museum and sewing bibs for the Solvang Lutheran Home. Martha never had idle hands; always sewing, cooking, needlework, and gardening.
Martha is survived by her four children; Marion Amby Adams of Tulare, CA, Frank and Ray Amby of Buellton, and Joan (Rueben Edinger) also of Buellton, two Step-Daughters; Eleanor (Soren) Laursen of New Jersey, and Mary Anna (Norm) Larsen of Sacramento, Several Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by her Husband Peter Amby in 1951, her second husband George Johansen in 1979, and a step-son Gunnar Johansen in 1991. Martha was born first of nine children of which six are still living in Nebraska and New Mexico.
Graveside Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, March 9th at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard. A reception will follow the services at the Family home, 1050 W. Hwy 246, Buellton.

Dear Amby Family......all I could think of is Martha, and Mom, and some of their buds finally gathered together again to catch up and settle into heaven finding their proper comfortable place. Those two were so very close for decades and decades and their memories of hard working, pioneering, generous women will be carried in our hearts throughout eternity. As their legacies we must be strong, and carry on with their spirit and determination and love of laughter. God Bless you and them and may they rest in eternal peace. Thinking of you now and always, Arnie, Millie, Anne Marie, Jason, Renee, Kayla, Kennedy, Cameron, and AJ Krogh

Dear Amby Family
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have so many wonderful memories of your wonderful mother and all of you. I still have doll clothes she made for my dolls. Our mothers were such good friends and my mother & I often talked about all the fun times in Buellton w/ your mother & the other Buellton school mothers! Joan & I had such fun playing in the barns and exploring. We are so lucky to have had such wonderful mothers. I still miss mine terribly. I didn't see the paper or would have been @ the service. with love & sympathy, Carol Nielsen Orton
