Barbara Graham Obituary

Barbara Wise Williamson Graham Barbara Wise Williamson Graham, 85, died on Saturday, November 17, 2007, in Tallahassee. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, December 8, at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, with a reception following at the church at 3158 Shamrock South, Tallahassee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tallahassee Watercolor Society for the Barbara Graham Memorial Award Fund, P.O. Box 38502, Tallahassee, FL 32315, or to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428. Born in 1922 to Benjamin Wise and Elsie Kohler Wise, Barbara Jane Wise grew up in New Jersey. After the death of her parents, when she was 13 years old, she moved in with her aunt and cousins and she became Barbara Jane Williamson. Her interest in art had early roots, as she was forever sketching and drawing in her teen years. In 1943 she joined the Waves, where she worked in the map department and later became station artist for communications. In 1945 she met and married John Graham, while he was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, in New Jersey. Both were in the military and met in the post-war era. Barbara and John lived together in Tampa and Jacksonville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Matteson, Illinois. In 1983 they made their final move to Tallahassee to be close to their oldest son, Tom Graham. Barbara, also known as Barba, will best be remembered as a prolific and respected painter and art teacher. In the late 1960s, while raising her four children, Barbara attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, graduating in 1970 with a BA in art education. She taught elementary art in Wisconsin and Illinois. In 1981 she completed a master's degree in art at Governor's State University in Illinois. After joining the Florida Watercolor Society in 1983, Barbara became a signature member, winning more than three awards in juried shows. She was president of the Tallahassee Watercolor Society and has taught numerous watercolor workshops. Barbara had a magnetic relationship with children. Her playful spirit was contagious and she inspired others to find their creative expression. Through her colorful stories and joyful spirit, Barbara always invited people to smile and enjoy life. Her brilliant watercolors still brighten up any room and she will be in the hearts of all her loved ones. Barbara is survived by her husband, John Graham of Tallahassee; her four children, Tom Graham of Tallahassee, Nancy Graham Walle (and husband Steven) of Puerto Armuelles, Panama, Katie Carter (and husband Bill) of Nevada City, California, and Shelby Graham (and husband Thad Nodine) of Santa Cruz, California; six grandsons, Jesse Wimmer (and wife Amy), Blair Graham (and wife Aubrey), Noel and Logan Carter, and Tyler and Walker Nodine; and one great-granddaughter, Hailey Ann Wimmer.

Dear Graham Family, My name is Pam Miller and I know the Grahams from many years at Felowship Presbyterian Church. In addition to always enjoying their refeshing take on things, I am the recipient of a beautiful floral watercolor painting with beautiful blues, greens and pinks. I received this gift for the smallest of favors a long time ago. I lent our children's crib and a doggy fence to the Grahams who needed some special accomidations for the dogs and visiting babies. To my surprise , I received the floral watercolor which still hangs in a place of honor and high regard in our family room. It is the heart and soul of our family room. I remember Barbara also painted four beautiful scenes of Christ teaching, walking, and visiting with children. These canvases greeted the Fellowship children in both the nursery and toddler rooms. We also were so lucky to have Barbara and John in bible studies. They were a hoot and full of wise and well thought out positions. My husband and I are so sorry that Barbara is gone for now. Best wishes. Pam and Dave Miller

Dearest John, Tom and Shelby,

Barba will be missed by so many whose hearts she touched. As a Pool Pal, she always made us feel welcome to join in the exercise. Barba always had a smile and a good word for all, regardless of race or ethnicity.

She inspired me to enjoy painting watercolors, but I was never a match for her joyful paintings.

As an early woman in the military WAVES she explored non-traditional ways of serving her country, sending cartoons and humor to relieve the doldrums of our troups in service.

Barbara and John created a wonderful family of kids and grandkids, I just wish I had the opportunity to meet them all, but I am out of town for the service.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you. I miss her greatly, and thank you for bringing her to the pool to inspire so many of us to enjoy life while we are here. God bless you all.

Love,
Janeth

Dear Tom,
You, Barbara and I shared many sessions at TOSPT in water aerobics and the gym. I just heard about Barbara's death today from Ginger and wanted to express my sorrow. She was such a delightful and friendly person and I loved knowing her. As you know, I lost my Jim two years ago so I do know what a difficult time this is and the loss and heartache you are going through. Please accept my deepest sympathy and may God wrap his loving arms around you as you face the days ahead.

Sincerely, Carolyn

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as we all grieve, but yet celebrate, Barba's life. Unfortunately, we will be out of the country when you have the memorial service. But know that we are thinking of you and your family.
