Catherine Harley Obituary

Catherine Domengeaux Harley

Catherine (Cathy Shelley) Domengeaux Harley, 77, passed away on February 23, 2021. She was born to Pat and Stokes Domengeaux and grew up in Freeport, Florida with her mother and stepfather, R.C. Shelley. Cathy attended Chipola Junior College and graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Elementary Education.

Cathy was a beloved teacher in Leon County for 35 years, 30 of which were at Astoria Park Elementary. She loved teaching and had a special talent for making each child feel valued and appreciated. Cathy was a generous person in thought and deed and had a passion for helping others; she actively attempted to "pay it forward." She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her daughter, Toshia Brown (Al), son, James "Jimmy" Harley (Tracie), and five grandchildren: Allison and Garrett Brown, Mackenzie, Brooklynn, and Peyton Harley. Sister, Dora Jean Daniel (Mason), sister-in-law, Ann Schildt, three nephews: Erik Schildt, Eric Johnson, Robert Shelley; and numerous cousins, extended family and many dear friends. Her parents, her loving husband, James "Jim," and her brother, Clinton Shelley, preceded Cathy in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Second Harvest of the Big Bend, or a charity of your choice.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Cathy and her amazing life will be held Friday, July 30, 2021 from 2 to 4 p.m. EDT at Goodwood Museum and Gardens (1600 Miccosukee Road) in the Jubilee cottage. Everyone is welcome to stop by and share a memory with the family.

Mrs. Harley was my third grade teacher at Astoria Park back in the late 1980s. She was one of the teachers I had that I always adored her presence long after leaving her classroom. My last time seeing her was two years ago where I am fortunate to have taken a selfie with her. I am saddened to hear about her passing.

Mrs Harley was my son's(John Painter) teacher at Astoria Park. She was a loving, caring teacher, the kind all students deserve. I also became friends with Dodie when we taught at Fairview. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May your many memories bring you comfort.
