Charles William "Billy" Cost
CHARLES WILLIAM "BILLY" COST of Quincy died November 8, 2014, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He was born December 20, 1926, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to William and Lonnie Cost. His aunt and uncle, Eugene and Pearl Thompson of Havana, raised him from an early age. Billy was educated in the Havana public schools and graduated from Georgia Military College. He attended the University of Alabama. During World War II he served in combat in the western pacific region aboard the USS John Q. Roberts. He was recalled during the Korean war and served aboard the USS Stribling.
He married the former Betty Lou Peacock of Quincy on January 1, 1951 and they remained married until his death.
Billy was co-owner of Cost-Plemmons Oldsmobile of Quincy and later owned Shade Tobacco Dusters, a crop-dusting business. He finally retired from the Gadsden County School System where he was head of heating and air-conditioning.
Billy had a life-long passion for all things aviation and was a highly accomplished pilot having obtained his pilot license at age 16 and willingly shared his enormous knowledge and experience with the flying community. He remained an active pilot for most of his life. Among his many other interests were cars, boats, trains, and anything mechanical. He was an avid reader, particularly of history, and was a music lover. He was a long-standing member of Centenary Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 64 years, Betty Lou, his daughter Kay C. Parker (Davis) of Charlottesville, Virginia, and his son William Eugene Cost (Judy) of Jacksonville, Florida, and by his sisters, Mrs. Belcher Hobson of Centerville, Alabama, and Mrs. J.L. Hunt of Birmingham, Alabama. He leaves four grandchildren: Davis and Thompson Parker, Rachel Cost Smith, and Jason Pappas. He also leaves his beloved cat, Abby.
His brothers Morris and Thomas Cost predeceased him.
The family will receive friends at their home on 921 Forest Drive, Quincy on Thursday November 13, from 4-6 PM. Burial will be private.
