Charles A. Hall

Charles A. Hall, 84 died Thursday, November 20, 2014 in Tallahassee. He will best be remembered for his many years of dedication to the firefighter brotherhood.

Charlie completed the Trade Union Program at Harvard University in 1968 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Labor and Manpower Studies from Florida International University in 1976.

Charlie had a long career as a City of Miami Firefighter from 1952 to 1979, spending much of his career in Firestation 2 in Overtown/Downtown Miami. He was President of the Miami Firefighters IAFF Local 587 from 1966-1970, and was IAFF International District Vice President from 1968 to 1980. In that capacity, he represented all of the professional firefighters in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and the US Virgin Islands. Charlie successfully fought for the right to collectively bargain in Florida in 1969. He served as a Florida Legislator in the State House of Representatives from 1980-1982. He served on the Miami Firefighters and Police Officers Retirement Fund Board for 15 years. Charlie was also a professor at Florida International University and continued his labor arbitration throughout his life. He was one of the first members of the Miami Dade Commission on Ethics.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 25 years Cindy, son Gary, daughter Sharon Hall Weiss and her husband Rodney, son Charles III and his wife Rana, stepdaughter Judy Hockensmith and her husband Bill, stepdaughter Shelley Gibbins, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adored him.

In lieu of a funeral, a Celebration of Life is being planned at a later date.
