Effie Morrison Scott

Effie Scott Obituary

Effie Morrison Scott Effie Morrison Scott after 99 years passed away at Hospice House in Tallahassee on the morning of July 22, 2010. She was born to Archibald Morrison and Letitia Ann Roberts on November 1, 1910, near the Sopchoppy River in Wakulla County, FL, and grew up on the farm that her grandparents had homesteaded in the 1800's. Her family moved to Tallahassee in the 1920's and she was graduated from Leon High School in the "half-year", 1927, when it was located on Park Avenue. Although she never attended college, her education did not end with high school - she had a great love of learning and continued to study for the rest of her life. She married Emeral C. Scott from Boston, Georgia and reared a family of five children in Tallahassee, FL. She worked for the State of Florida Comptroller's Office, and retired from the FSU Strozier Library in 1976. She was a member of her much loved church, Bethel United Methodist Church and had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Anna Jackson Chapter. Effie was an avid gardener with a love of unusual flowers that surrounded her home. She typified the spirit of the Florida pioneer in her life - she had a great love of family, family history and her Florida heritage. All who knew her enjoyed her stories and remembrances of early life in Wakulla County and Tallahassee. She told stories of witnessing the first automobile in Wakulla County in the early 1900's and then of watching on television in 1969, as Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. She had a resilient spirit, strong work ethic and respect for honesty and integrity which she instilled in her family. She was greatly loved and will be missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emeral C. Scott, and survived by her five children, Betty Frazer and husband, Eley, of Albany Georgia, Letitia Strickland of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, James Scott and wife, Jeanette, of Thomasville, Georgia, Mary Barineau and husband, Ivan, of Havana, Florida, Barbara Gouner and husband, Aubrey, of Gulf Breeze, Florida; and their families; grandchildren; great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Visitation will be at Culley's on Riggins Road on Sunday, July 25 at 1:30 p.m. EDT, prior to the funeral service beginning at 2:30 p.m. A graveside service will follow at the Boston Georgia City Cemetery. Donations to Big Bend Hospice in appreciation for their gift of service will be appreciated by the family.

I will always remember my "Aunt" Effie. I enjoyed our discussion over the years. The fact that she still insisted on calling me Jean Baby up to the end meant so much to me.
