Frances Parrish Obituary

Frances Starr Parrish QUITMAN - Frances Starr Parrish, 90, of Roland Park Place, Baltimore, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, of complications from a fall. A graveside service for the interment of ashes will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home (229-263-8842) in Quitman is handling arrangements. Born Frances Lucretia Starr in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late Henry Barron Starr Sr. and Margarete Newsome Starr. She was a 1934 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in English literature and Greek. She received a Master of Science Degree in journalism from Emory University in 1942 and a Master of Science Degree in education and history from the University of Georgia in 1952. Mrs. Parrish taught in Atlanta from 1936-1957. She later taught special education in Montgomery, Ala. From 1962 until her retirement in 1978, she taught elementary and junior-high school students in Tallahassee. She co-wrote and edited numerous social-science textbooks used in Florida during the 1970s. Often recognized for her excellent teaching, she remained in contact with various former students for more than 40 years. She married Henry Parker Parrish, a civil engineer, in 1943. Mrs. Parrish served in the American Red Cross from 1944-1946 as an assistant field director in Washington, D.C., and Savannah, Ga. She was a lifetime member of the Daffodil Garden Club of Tallahassee. She was an officer in the Association for Childhood Education. She was an avid reader and traveler. Her fifth and final trip to England was aboard the Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. She moved to Baltimore in 1998. She is survived by a daughter, Margarete Parrish Warwick; a son-in-law, Malcolm Warwick; two nieces; a nephew; six great-niecesand-nephews; seven great-great-nieces and-nephews; and a great many devoted friends. She was preceded in death in 1977 by her husband and in 1979 by their adopted son, Robert.
