George's hobbies and interests were varied, but his passion was orchids, at one time having over 500 plants and 75 species. He is also the namesake for cephaelis gaugerii, a species of plant he discovered while in the Panama Canal Zone. He was an active parishioner at Epiphany Lutheran Church and a member of the Panama Canal Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion.
