George J. Townsend

The Villages, Fl. - George J Townsend 72, died Sunday Dec. 18, 2011.

He was born in Rochester, N.Y., grew up in Elmira, N.Y., Served as a pilot in the U. S. Air Force for 5 years flying KC-135's for SAC. Moved to Atlanta where he was a pilot for Delta Air Lines for 35 years. Came to The Villages in 2003. He was an avid tennis player, farmer, and airplane/car enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; son, Tony Townsend of League City, Tx., daughter, Sabrina Sargent of Mc Donough, Ga., sisters, Alair Townsend of New York City, N.Y. and Deborah Herold of Yalaha, Fl., brother, James Townsend of Hedgesville, W.V.; and four grandchildren.

Independent Funeral Home, Quincy, Fl. in charge of arrangements. 850-875-1529. Visitation 4-6 Mon., Dec 19, Services Graveside at Sunny Dell Cemetery, Gretna, Fl. Tues., Dec. 20 at 11 A.M.

It was over the counter in ATL crew sked in the late 70s, early 80s, that I knew George. We tipped a few along the way.. He was a fine fellow in my book.

Unfortunately, I did not get an opportunity to know George, but as Delta Golden Wings, Inc. secretary, I send condolences to you on behalf of all our membership. I'm sure many of our members worked with or knew George during his Delta tenure. Many will contact you individually.

George and I were USAF cadet classmates and traveled together in my VW from Primary to Basic via our homes in the Northeast. He was a great guy and a good friend. I am very sad to learn of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family.
