Harriett Brooks Obituary

Harriett Burch Brooks GAINESVILLE - Harriett Burch Brooks, 82, a nurse, died Sunday Sept. 10, 2006. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Citrus County Unit, P.O. Box 1902, Inverness, Fl. 34451, or call (800) 227-2345. Born May 24, 1924, in DeLand, she was the daughter of William A. Burch and Mary Cadwadler Burch. She earned her nursing degree from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and her public-health degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She started her nursing career at Lykes Memorial Hospital in Brooksville. She also was the county nurse for the Citrus County Health Department and as Director of Nurses for the Leon County Health Department. She worked for Health and Rehabilitative Services before retiring. She moved to Gainesville from Brooksville in 2001. She was a strong advocate of public health and geriatric care. She was a member of Eden Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Owens (and John) of Sopchoppy and Susan Brooks Gair (and Bill) of Gainesville; a sister, Marion Knapp of DeBary; four grandchildren, Lyndsey Marie Gair and Lauren Nicole Gair, both of Gainesville, Wendy Louise Porto of East Ridge, Tenn., and Kathy Porto Veal of Ringgold, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Earl Brooks, who died Feb. 5, 2000.

Aunt Harriett was/is my Mother's baby sister. She will be sadley missed by this side of the family, May she rest in Blissful peace for eternity. With all our love, Marion Burch Knapp, and family.

I knew harriet a long time ago through her daughter Susan Brooks(Gair) -- I was at Susan's wedding and have been attempting to contact

her and her mother for many years. I am deeply sorry at learning that she has gone from us but we are better for having known her.
