Hosea Thomas Obituary
Dr. Hosea Melrose Thomas, 61, of Daly City, CA and formerly of Monticello, FL transitioned this earthly life on Sunday, August 19, 2012 in Trinity County, CA. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Bethel A.M.E. Church, Monticello. Viewing-visitation is Friday from 5-8 p.m. at TILLMAN OF MONTICELLO 850-997-5553. He was raised by his grandmother, the now-late Lucinda Roberts Thomas, along with his uncles who were like brothers, Luther, Willlie, Cleveland, Ola, Roosevelt, Elvin and John Thomas. He received his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College and later received a Doctor of Medicine at Howard University. In 1981, Dr. Thomas began working at Laguna Honda Hospital, San Francisco, CA and by the end of his tenure, he had served as the hospital's Chief of Staff and Medical Director.
Treasuring his love and legacy are: his loving wife, Dr. Brenda Peoples Thomas; daughters, Marinda (Jeffrey) Thomas McBride and Courtney Thomas; son, Jonathan Thomas; brother, Henry Mitchell Jr.; uncle, John Thomas; aunt, Endia Thomas; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Other than his grandmother, Dr. Thomas was also predeceased by his mother, Lillian Thomas Mitchell and father, Richard Carter.

Brenda,
Thank you for sharing your beautiful family and providing lifelong memories of Hosea as a loving husband, father and friend. I witnessed first hand the love and pride he had for his family. He was a warm and gentle Spirit. I will miss him. I am certain that God's arms were open wide when he was touched by an Angel and Heaven has been greatly enhanced by his presence!

Dr. Thomas was a wonderful leader and physician at Laguna Honda Hospital. He was very supportive of the nursing staff. You could ask questions and consult with him on anything. I remember leaving my unit as Nurse Manager to go into the Nursing Education Department. He said to me "Never lose your clinical skills" I will always remember that as i continue to work in nursing

Hosea was a wonderful father to his beloved children, and a loving husband to his wife, my dear friend Brenda, and a caring individual to any in need. God has blessed all who share memories of who he was and how he touched their lives. My heart goes out to his family, especially you Brenda, the mother of his children.

Dr. Thomas, Hosea, was my consulting physician for me as a nurse practitioner. It was an environment that was not necessarily open to having nurse practitioners work at Laguna Honda. In both his roles as my MD consultant and medical director he was supportive of my role, appreciative of my work and encouraging of my advancement. I am grateful to him and so sad that he is gone from us at such a young and vital age.

I worked with Hosea for 15 years at Laguna Honda. Not only was he a warm and kind colleague, I so remember passing by a patient's room and seeing his example of conversation and care with the patients and their families. How can he be gone from us? It was my honor to know Hosea , work with him and benefit from his service not only in medicine but to the community. His love and protection of nature, art, history and belief in personal responsibility for ones own health and body, were a living understanding of public and community health. His donation of self ( including hundreds of pints of blood), as well as his 10,000 steps each day leave a legacy that our families and community will always be proud of. I am so very happy that he had some time to spend with the love of his life, Brenda and his children in the past few years. It was well deserved. We know that he will rest in peace. We were so fortunate that he was here.

I worked with Hosea from 2001 until his retirement from Laguna Honda last year, and will remember him with enormous affection and admiration as a remarkably capable, kind, calm, courteous, warm-hearted, smiling man who was as thoughtful about his patients' social and emotional health as their physical well-being. I had hoped to get to know him better now that I too have retired, and miss him greatly. My most profound sympathies to his family and friends, and my thanks for his presence among us.
