He was a wonderful attorney. Always a beacon to others to sit and talk about any issue. He loved music and saying a kind word. I will miss his pleasant smile and laugh.

We can rest assured in the knowledge that Joe will be pleading our case(s) before the ultimate hearings officer eventually. (I for one will need that advocacy.)

Joe was a beacon of good humor and clear thinking. He always made you feel good - and he cared so deeply for the people that VR served. His laughter and insightfulness will always be with us. One of a kind he was - and how terribly missed he will be. We loved him!!

Joe and I worked closely together for the last 5 years of his life. We respected each other as lawyers and cared for each other as friends. What faith and courage he showed every day of those years! He never shied away from the reality of his illness, but always knew our God was carrying him through it all. Joe fully lived every day that God gave him, and by doing so, he gave me and others inspiration, comfort and the affirmation that we can do the same. We will meet again on the far-side banks of Jordan, my friend. God bless and keep you, Annette and all the family.

But a small part of Joe Shields life, he was a large part of mine. I will never forget Joe and the friendship the Lord allowed us to enjoy during his brief time with us in Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). As a sinner saved by grace, I look forward to seeing Joe again in heaven’s glory – where the Lord shall wipe away every tear and replace it with joy and there shall no longer be any death, no longer any mourning, crying, or pain.

I knew Joe as a man of integrity, a defender of truth and protector of those less fortunate. I imagine he lost few battles in the courtroom and now has rested his most successful case and gained the ultimate victory in Christ. Joe loved the Lord Jesus and never waivered in his trust of Him as he courageously dealt with melanoma cancer. Christ was always bigger than cancer in Joe’s mind. Cancer had no power to destroy Joe’s love for Christ. As we ran into each other in the hallways of VR, we often talked about the Lord or the special love given to him in his life: his wife Annette and his family. Joe cherished family beyond what earthly words can describe.

Psalm 23 speaks of the “valley of the shadow of death.” Yesterday morning I read, “For every shadow, there must be light. A shadow may frighten you, but a shadow cannot really hurt you. Death is but a shadow if you know the Lord Jesus Christ. If you keep your face toward to The Light (John 8:12), the shadow will fall behind you. You won’t even see the shadow. God doesn’t bring us to a valley to leave us there. He always brings us through.” May the Lord comfort Joe and his family during this time shadow and keep them looking toward The Light.

Dear Annette, I am so sorry to read that Joe has lost his long, hard fought battle. I can remember as a young girl seeing the two of you at church and admiring the love that we could all see that you had for each other. How wonderful that you had 48 years together. We will be praying for you and your precious family that God will hold you, all, up during this very sad time. DiAnne (Carrouth) and Larry Cobb

My heart and prayers go out to each of you at this difficult time in your lives. I pray God's hand of mercy and grace on you and that He will give you the strength and courage to walk through this shadow of darkness. I pray that one day may you be reunited with your father, husband, uncle, grandpa, and friend. Mr. Shields was a very good person who devoted his life to his family. He helped others who needed a step up in life when needed. He introduced me to the world of law by giving me a part time job in his office, as a single mother trying to make ends meet, which ultimately gave me a 15 year career as a legal secretary. I am proud to have been able to call him friend. God Bless Each of You.

I have your family in my thoughts and prayers. Our family sends our sympathy in this time of grief for Uncle Joe. He was so loved by his family and those who call themselves 'his family.' I know Reid felt he was an uncle. May God continue to be with you and support you in this time in your earthly lives. Margaret Worrell
