Kurt Westfall Obituary

Kurt Westfall Kurt Westfall, 59, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, the love of his life, Lucy Bowler Westfall of Tallahassee. The service will be at 3 p.m. EDT Thursday at Pisgah Methodist Church off Centerville Road. The visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the same location. Family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Brian and Jeanne Kimball, 2741 Shiloh Way, after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Gulf Winds Track Club-Chenowich Fund, P.O. Box 3447, Tallahassee 32315, or the Leon County Humane Society, 413 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel (850-877-8191), is handling local arrangements. Kurt was born Aug. 27, 1947, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Virginia Rose Smith Westfall and Charles Richard Westfall and grandson of Joseph A. and Beatrice J. Smith and Charles G. and Anna C. Westfall. The family moved to Maderia Beach in 1959. He received varsity letters in football, basketball and track and graduated from Seminole High School in 1966. He attended the University of Florida, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was a scholarship athlete on the track-and-field team. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and master's degree from Florida State University. Kurt and longtime friend Brian Kimball owned and operated Westfall Framing in Tallahassee until Kurt's serious automobile accident in 1999. Since fighting back from the accident, he had been teaching photography at Tallahassee Community College and coaching pole vault athletes from most Tallahassee high schools at Maclay High School. In addition, he loved his pets, Scotty and Sophie, and enjoyed planning, building and woodworking. Other survivors include his beloved daughters, Erin Elizabeth Tupper (and husband Benjamin James Tupper), Megan Elise Westfall (and fiancŽe Alex Arevalo) and Emily Ann Westfall (and partner Michael Ryan Crouch); his sister, Judi "JB" Westfall (and partner Walter Boykin); grandchildren Luke Westfall Tupper and Anna Elise Tupper; stepmother Florence Westfall; mother-in-law Margaret Bowler; and brothers-in-law David and John Bowler and sisters-in-law, Mary West and Peggy Bernardo and their families. His sudden and unexpected death leaves his family, friends and students desperately missing his love, smiles, courage and enthusiasm for life. "We are grateful to God for the opportunity to have had him in our lives."

Lucy, Megan, Erin, Emily, family & friends,

I am very sorry for the loss of Kurt Westfall. I enjoyed meeting him along with his wife and daughters when they visited Emily in the Badlands. Emily and I became close friends that summer and it was so neat to meet her family too. They seem like such a close knit family. I know that will get them through this tough time. Glad to hear that Emily and her mom and sisters are currently working on a garden in which to spread Kurt's ashes. If you need any gardening tips feel free to call! Otherwise my thoughts and prayers are with you!

Mrs. Westfall,

I've known you since you were teaching when I was in second grade and since then you have taught my kids. You are a good person and though times may be hard right now remember that God does everything for a reason, even if sometimes we don't understand what that reason is just then. Me and my family will continue to keep you and your family in our prayers and if you need anything please don't hesitate to ask. May God continue to be with you and keep you through this time of triumph.

It has been many years since I have seen Kurt but his death saddens me as it does so many others. Kurt earned the affection of his classmates, his friends on the track team and at Church By the Sea. I was fortunate enough to have him introduce me to the UF campus where he remained my friend. He was above all kind, gentle, spiritual and talented. My sympathies to his entire family.

Dear JB and Westfall Family -
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of such a vibrant person. I remember him from his days at Seminole High School and he was loved and respected by his classmates. He was a Senior Superlative - Most Popular - because everybody liked him!!
I used to cheer for him and his fellow Warhawks in all of their athletic endeavors. I also had them work hard in my AvsC Class.
When I became a principal I interviewed a young science teacher with the last name of Westfall. I asked her if she was any relation to Kurt Westfall. She said "Yes." I said, "You will be hired!"
As we used to say every day at the end of class, "Da Sveedanya Towvarish" which is Russian for "Goodbye Comrade!" We will miss you!!!

I am so sorry to hear about Kurt's death. I was never fortunate enough to get to know him well, but we went to Seminole High School together, and he was always on my personal "most-admired" list...I remember him as friendly, gregarious, sharp, successful, kind, talented and clever. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Kurt was always one of the people I admired most in high school. He was not only a fine athlete, but a good and kind man, full of spirit and a warm smile for all. The world was a better place with Kurt in it. He will not be forgotten.
My sincerest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Westfall family,
I just want to thank you for allowing Coach to be away from you all so often in order to be with me and my teammates three to four times a week vaulting till the sun went down. I loved those practices then and appreciate them even more so now that I realize that they will prove to be some of the most precious moments of my life. Coach taught us to vault, yes, but more importantly he taught us to live with love and laughter and to never give up. We will miss him every time we step on the runway and throughout our lives as we continue to strive for the best life has to offer. My prayers will always be with you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have such a man in my life.

To the Westfall Family,
Kurt was such an inspiration and role model to our daughters Alexis and Kara when they ran track at Maclay. His generosity was without limits, and the encouragement he gave to the pole vaulters spilled over to everyone on the team.
Kurt's memory will live on in the character and strength he instilled in those athletes who were fortunate enough to have been trained by him.

Lucy and family, and Judi...
It's so hard to know what to say. But first please allow me to send you heartfelt love, as well as prayers for peace and comfort. Kurt and I grew up together on Madeira Beach. He was like a brother and best friend, Judi was like my sister and Mrs. Westfall was like another mom. It seemed that Kurt and I were always running someplace...from Madeira Jr. High through Seminole HS...and playing football together.
Though we haven't seen eachother in such a long time, he has been on my heart so often over the years. His friendship remains precious. I am so blessed to have had all that, not to mention being there for his wedding to you, Lucy. Perhaps it's so hard to know what to say here because there are so many memories...from his participation in the Seminole Track Team Choir and Chorus which gave birth to the multi-versed song that "immortalized" Rick Wanamaker, to the time Kurt proudly made his own shirt (and wore it to school!) and handcrafted a beautiful wooden chessboard...and so much more.
It's hard to lose a husband, dad, brother and friend. Those of us who knew Kurt are saddened, but at the same time I sit here, remember, and smile.....so grateful that he touched our lives.

Blessings-
Terry Casey (aka "Fred" Kaharl)

We remember Kurt from his running days and participation in Gulf Winds Track Club activities. He was someone you didn't mind bumping into because after talking with him you felt better about things. The fact that he accomplished and contributed so much to his community after his accident and persevered for so long in spite of much adverstity is a tribute to his spirit and joy of life. We were surely blessed that he chose to live in Tallahassee, where he is remembered fondly by many. Our condolences to all his family and friends.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Mr. Westfall was a wonderful teacher and I feel privelaged that I had the opportunity to learn from him last semester. He loved photography and the way he taught and his passion made me love it just as much. I will always have the photos that he helped me with so much to perfect, to look at and remember him by.

Lucee,
I went to Madeira Beach Junior H.S. and Seminole H.S. with Kurt (SHS Class of66'). I hadn't seen Kurt in quite a while but was shocked to hear of his death. Another close friend , Terry Casey called me to tell me the news. Terry , Myself and Kurt were on the track team in middle school throughout high school. Kurt was a good friend and I'm so sorry to hear of his death . I'll miss him but I'll think of the good times the three of us had in high school . Take care and my thoughts are with you all.

Dear Lucy, Erin, Megan, Emily, JB, and all the extended Westfall Family --- No truer friend ever existed. Forty years of that great laugh and that wonderful love of life. These last years, especially, he was an inspiration and a personal hero, and we'll always have that. It is hard for us to imagine a world without Kurt on it, but it is even harder to grasp your own loss. I know he's smiling and off on his last most excellent adventure! We love him and each of you, undoubtedly his proudest legacy.

I worked for Kurt at Westfall Framing from ’88 through ’92. I started when I was 17 and left as I was graduating from college. I grew up there. Kurt was the first long term boss I had and Westfall Framing was my family.
The memories I have of Kurt and Westfall Framing have influenced me greatly. Though I lost touch with Kurt, I am deeply saddened in hearing of his death. He was a great man with a wonderful perspective of life. I learned a great deal from him.

Mrs. Westfall,
So sorry for your loss. Mr. Westfall was a wonderful man. My oldest son was able to meet Mr. Westfall at the Thursday evening track meets last year. I enojoyed watching him teach the children how to pole vault. I can remember when he started teaching the children in Tallahassee about pole vaulting. He has definitely made his mark in Tallahassee.
