Leonard C. Hassell

Leonard C. Hassell, age 76, of Panama City Beach Florida, passed away on April 18, 2016 after a brief illness.

Leonard was born in Columbia, North Carolina on April 12, 1940. Leonard was the son of the late Elmer and Dorothy Hassell.

Leonard was married to Martha Jane Peacock on July 10, 1971; they were married 44 years.

Leonard moved to Tallahassee Florida in 1966 as the General Manager, of the now Coastal Lumber Company in Havana Florida. With his extensive experience and knowledge in real estate and timber, Leonard founded Crossland Timber Company of Tallahassee Florida, where he owned and operated his business until his retirement. Leonard developed many residential and commercial properties with various business partners throughout North Florida and Georgia over several decades.

Leonard was an avid hunter and saltwater fisherman. His passion was deep sea fishing for grouper with friends and family out of St. Marks Florida for many years.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Martha Jane; his brother, Elmo Hassell (Ernestine); his son, Leonard Dean Hassell; his daughters, Pamela Herrick (Mike), Kimberly Ostrenga (Bernard), Allyson McKay (Daniel); his grandchildren, Nikolas, Allen, Stacey, Michael, Bryan, Kelsey, Bailey and Elizabeth. Leonard was also a great-grandfather to 6.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Dorothy Hassell and his brothers Woodrow and Hillard Wilson.

Leonard was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Covenant Hospice, 107 W 19th Street, Panama City, Florida 32405 or charity of choice.

The family of Leonard Hassell wishes to thank the clinical team at Covenant Hospice Inpatient Unit at Bay Medical Hospital, of Panama City, Florida, for their compassion and dedication to the care of our beloved.

Martha, Kim and Allison, so very sorry about Leonard. We so enjoyed all of you when you were in St. Marks, and Gail was especially fond of Leonard. They had many great fishing trips, to say nothing of the fishing stories. Sending love, and strength to all of you.
