Paul Kwilecki Obituary

Paul Kwilecki Paul Kwilecki, 81, of Bainbridge, GA, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Memorial Hospital. Services will be private. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.iveyfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bainbridge Decatur County Humane Society, P.O. Box 429, Bainbridge, GA 39818. Mr. Kwilecki was born February 24, 1928 in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Julian Gerard Kwilecki and Pearl Goldstein Kwilecki. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and received his Master's in English Literature from Emory University. He was a retired partner in I. Kwilecki's Sons Hardware and a documentary photographer. A very well-known photographer, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His photographs have been displayed at the High Museum in Atlanta and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as internationally. He published two books of his photographs, Understandings and Lowly Wise. He was active in the Bainbridge Rotary Club for many years and a member of Temple Beth El. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Williford Kwilecki. Survivors include his son, Paul Kwilecki, Jr. of Ormond Beach, FL; three daughters, Susan Kwilecki of Christiansburg, VA, Frances Kwilecki of Tallahassee, FL, and Elizabeth Whaley and her husband, Don, of Bainbridge, GA; and three grandchildren, Charlotte Bryan, Sarah Jane Kwilecki and William Paul Whaley.
