Ricky Atkinson Obituary

Ricky Dexter Atkinson, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away peacefully September 20th after a brief battle with leukemia. Ricky was born on November 3rd, 1954 and was a life-long resident of Tallahassee. He is survived by his wife (the best catch of his life) Kimberly Harder Atkinson and his precious daughter, Megan Lee Atkinson. He was an outside salesman for United Rentals, a profession he enjoyed for many years.
An avid hunter and fisherman his entire life, Ricky was a longtime member of the Tallahassee Bass Anglers and original member of the Hawg Hunters Bass Club. His family and friends will tell you he loved nothing better than to be up at the crack of dawn, fishing. As a longtime booster of the FSU Seminoles, during football season he could always be found supporting his favorite team. Ricky lived life to the fullest. A devoted family man who enjoyed skiing vacations, amusement parks and just plain spending time with those he loved. He was a lifelong member of Fellowship Baptist Church where he was active in Sunday School, Children's Ministries and the Building Programs. His passion however, was the music ministry at Fellowship where he was a member of many choirs, ensembles and praise teams. He will be missed around the Tallahassee community during December as he sang with the Victorian Ensemble touching lives of many who were not able to get out and enjoy the Christmas Season.
Ricky had a large and loving family, preceded in death by his father, Raymond (Red) Atkinson and his mother Margaret Lee Atkinson. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Ellen Atkinson and brother Ramsey Atkinson. Greatly loved nieces and nephews: Romney, Angie, Ronnie, Chauncy and Ryan and many great-nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Wednesday September 22, 2010 at Bevis Funeral Home from 6 pm to 8 pm. Services for Ricky will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church, 3705 North Monroe Street on Thursday September 23, 2010 at 11:00 am. If you choose, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund at Fellowship Baptist Church.
Until we see each other again, you will be greatly missed.

Kim, You and Ricky maintained the notion that people could be both authentic and welcoming, even with a large (to a hermit like me) social circle. And that those qualities, in extending to new friends as well as old, can remain and never recede. My deepest sympathies to you and lovely Meg.

Family and Friends of Ricky,
I am so sorry for your loss. My family attended Fellowship in the 1970's, and I remember Kim, Ricky and his family vividly. One Sunday morning at church, I had a straight pin in my mouth. I must have been about 8 years old. I lost it, and was convinced that I had swallowed it. From that morning on, Ricky called me "pin-cushion". I felt so special! I wanted you to realize that people who passed through your lives long ago are praying for you and hurting for your loss. I pray you feel the loving arms of your Heavenly Father wrapped around you.
