He was a superb high school civics teacher. We knew that hd was active in partisan politics, but he was fair, objective, and decent.

I am so thankful for Mr. Schmalfuss. I learned so much from him, and I can remember so much from his class - and that shows what kind of teacher he was! His class was full of stories, laughs, and serious talks from time to time. Here are some of the things I remember:
-Camels are his favorite animals!
-"Colder than a polar bear's nose"
-Recollections from his time at the North Pole
-Dixie Land Jazz, not 7/11 songs
-"Neat, Reat, and Complete"
-"See you around like a doughnut!" (I still say this sometimes!)
These are just a few things. I am thankful for his loving care for his students, his desire for them to learn and to seek wisdom, and for his love for God. We will miss you, Mr. Schmo, but I know you are enjoying being in heaven with Jesus far more than we could imagine!

Belva, it really seems such a short time since we saw you in your wedding dress...and of course it isn't. I remember when you were worried about Bob's health, about 27 years ago, and you had to learn to cook "less southern" food! You did a wonderful job of keeping him healthy, and built one of the best families I know. He was a very special, kind man, with an enthusiastic committment to teaching, music and helping others. Wonderful memories, and we are so sorry for your loss and the rest of your family's. Love, Vicki and Walter

Schmo was a wonderful teacher while my children attended NFC in the 1990s.
He took a genuine concern in his students and how he taught them. You do not see that in teachers now.
He supported the athletics at the school, and he was hilarious at basketball and softball games.
Our hope and prayer for his family is that the memories of your husband and Dad, and how he touched so many students and their parents lives will be a sense of comfort for you all at this sad time.

Bob Schmalfuss was a true friend and coworker! He never was lost for words. He never knew a stranger. He always had a kind word to say. He loved everyone. He loved his Lord. He loved his family! The world is a better place because of Bobs sharing his knowledge and faith with others.

I had Bob as a teacher at Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest, Illinois in the early 60s. He was a free spirit, full of fun and most concerned for his students. Years later I used him as an example and fashioned a 35 year career teaching special education. If I had known how to contact him I would have been pleased to visit over old times. I will keep him in my prayers. A fine man. Bob Ralston LFHS 1961-65

Mr. Schmalfuss was wonderful man and an amazing educator. I will miss his love of education, love of God, love for his students, and the many memories I have of him from my time at NFC. His classes in civics, geography, and economics had a substantial impact on my educational successes. I will miss the occasional visits to his home and the reminiscing about the good old days.
