Charles Beard Obituary

BEARD, Charles Warren "Chuck" 78, of Madeira Beach, died Wednesday, Dec. 3rd, 2008, at Largo Medical Center. He came here in 1959, from his native Allentown, PA. Chuck had a variety of work experience, but his greatest pride was having served as Fire Chief of Madeira Beach Fire Department from 1972 until 1986. He began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter in Madeira Beach. He retired from Madeira Beach as Code Enforcement Officer, after leaving the fire department due to injuries suffered in the city's July Fourth fireworks display in 1986. After retirement, Chuck became a master gardener through the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service. He volunteered at the county's Botanical Gardens and went on to work there for 6 years as a maintenance crew member. He was a two time past Exalted Ruler and member of the Holiday Isles Elks Lodge #1912 in Madeira Beach. He was a sailor and a member of the Crystal Island Cruising Club and the Florida Fire Chief's Association. He was an Army veteran. He was skilled in many areas, from woodworking to sewing. He could fix anything around the house. He loved to travel and take day trips with his wife, and to spend time with their pets. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Nancy; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Maureen Pelamati; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Edward Creswell; and 3 grandchildren, Sofia Pelamati, Steven Creswell and William Creswell, all of St. Petersburg. Visitation will be 3-5 pm on Sunday, Dec. 7th, 2008, at Reese Funeral Home, 6767 Seminole Blvd., where a Celebration of Life service will be held at 5 pm, and you will be invited to share memories of Chuck and how he touched your life. A reception will be held at the funeral home following the service. Memorial donations may be made to The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760. E. Please accept my condolences on your loss. I am a former recovery room nurse at Bayfront who cared for Mr. Beard after all of his numerous surgeries during 1986. Throughout all the surgeries, pain, and setbacks, Mr. Beard remained pleasant, kind, witty, and determined. It was a privilege to meet and care for this amazing man.

Chuck was absolutely wonderful company. We visited with Nancy and Chuck several times, both at our home and theirs, and always enjoyed Chuck's unique sense of humor.
We will never forget watching the boat parade from the warmth of Chuck's great van a few years ago. He will be sorely missed by many. Rest in peace, Chuck. Our sincere condolences to Chuck's family.
