Charles Reed Obituary

Former California State University chancellor Charles Reed, who led the country's largest public university system over a 14-year period that ended in 2012, has died. He was 75.
Reed's tenure at the top of the Cal State system spanned a period that included the opening of its 23rd campus as well as the difficult years of steep tuition increases that followed the Great Recession.
"Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with Charlie's family and loved ones," Cal State Chancellor Timothy White said in a statement. "Charlie will always be remembered as a formative figure in our university's history and as a tenacious, passionate champion of public higher education."

Charles B. Reed was an exceptional person. He once stated that while we should "never forgot who signs your check," we should keep in mind that we don't work for "institutions". We work for people, especially for the dedicated public servants who make America's beautiful system of public education the envy of the world.
Yes, Charles B. Reed will be remembered as a mover and shaker. More importantly, our Charlie Reed was a true and trusted steward, a remarkable teacher, a kind and caring family man and a friend. He made this world a better place.
Thank you.

Charlie was the rare person who knew how to get things done in the political arena and had a deep understanding of the policy issues at stake. He had sharp elbows, a brilliant mind, and a tender heart. It was a pleasure to work with him in the Florida Governor's Office, and he went on to make massive contributions to higher education. There will be only one Charlie Reed, but the world could use a lot more people like him.

Charlie Reed was an outstanding man - smart, generous, dedicated. I just wish Florida hadn't lost him to California, but he made history wherever he was. My loves goes out to the family, especially daughter Susan.

I have wonderful memories of Dr. Reed while I worked with the BOR. He was highly respected and was a very talented man. I offer my deepest condolences to his family. They should be proud of him in every respect. My prayers are for his family, I know he is missed. It is a wonderful thing to hear the praise " job well done from the highest authority".

I had the privilege to be the General Counsel to the Florida Board of Regents while Dr. Reed was the Chancellor of the State University System, and I enjoyed both working with and for him. He was one of the smartest and most dedicated people I've known.
