Daniel McMullen Obituary

MCMULLEN, Daniel Guy Jr., passed away at his home, "Mulligan's Riverside Lodge," in Port Richey, Fla., December 5, 2006, of cancer. Born December 18, 1934, in Clearwater, Fla., Dan was the oldest son of D. Guy McMullen Jr. and Laura McMullen and a descendent of the McMullen pioneer family of Pinellas County. Throughout Pinellas County, Dan was a well known and highly respected executive and civic leader. He was dedicated to many causes that promoted the well planned, orderly and enlightened growth of his beloved Pinellas County with a particular interest in salt water conservation, commercial fishing licensing and the preservation of our area water quality and natural resources. As a successful entrepreneur, Dan was the owner of McMullen Real Estate from 1956 to the present. He developed many businesses, restaurants, motels, shopping centers and RV parks in the area including Windsor Woods Convalescent Center, Hudson, Fla., Oak Springs Travel Park, Port Richey, Caladesi Cove Motel, Dunedin, Fla., Island View Travel Park, Navarre Beach, Fla., and Windsor Woods Office Center, Hudson. Additionally, Dan served a chairman to the NCNB Bank Advisory Board and was on the board of directors for the Bank of Holiday. Other boards included the National Leukemia Society of America, Pinellas County Commission on Aging and the Port Authority for the city of Port Richey. Dan's devotion to public service also extended beyond the local counties. In the 1970s, Dan McMullen was elected to the Florida House of Represent-atives. He also served as chairman to the subcommittee of aging, was a member of the interim committees on mental health, traffic safetyh and health and welfare. Other memberships included the standing committees on finance and tax, insurance, appropriations, hotels and restaurants, industrial development, public lands and parks, salt water conservation, national legislative conference and the national road and highway committee. Dan was a graduate of Clearwater High School and attended St. Petersburg College and Clemson University in South Carolina. Daniel in survived by his loving wife, Maribeth Hartger McMullen; his stepsons, Seth Motl and wife, Katie, of Lutz, Fla., and Eli Motl of Port Richey, and the entire Motl family; stepdaughters, Ridgley Johnson of Summerville, S.C., and Susan Inglett of Bishop, Ga.; his father, D. Guy McMullen Sr., 98, of Clearwater; his brother, Paul McMullen, and his wife, Janet, of Clearwater; sister, Linda Davidson, and husband, Ivan; sister, Laura Weikel, and husband, Ted; all of Seminole, Fla.; nephews, Brett McMullen and wife, Karen, Paul McMullen Jr. and wife, Tonya, and Kent Davidson and wife, Kathy, all of Clearwater. Dan also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and loving, caring friends. With the coastline name of "Ole Dan," he will be forever remembered for his clever wit, original humor, abiding generosity, love of people and his exuberant enjoyment of life. The family will receive visitors 4-8 p.m. December 8, 2006, at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens, 1750 Curlew Road, Palm Harbor, Fla. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. December 9, 2006, at First United Methodist Church, 411 Turner St., Clearwater, with burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the McMullen Cemetery, Coachman Road, Clearwater.
