David SZYMANSKI Obituary

SZYMANSKI, David A. 63, of Tampa, FL passed away peacefully at home on May 14, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 25, 1961, in Buffalo, New York, Dave was a faithful follower of Christ; a devoted husband, father and grandfather; a loyal brother; and a faithful friend. He lived a life like Christ, always thinking of and making sacrifices for others. A natural communicator and avid reader, Dave fell in love with journalism in middle school and pursued his passion at Saint Bonaventure University and Michigan State. As such, his career path included that of writer, business editor, corporate communications manager, and educator. Dave was an avid sports fan and enthusiastically supported local teams, but he also had a quiet, reflective side and a deep appreciation for poetry. Dave's great love in life was his family. His children knew a father who eagerly volunteered to coach on the field, sit in the front row at dance recitals, and initiate family gatherings. His children were a priority, and his involvement in their lives demonstrated how much they were loved. Dave is survived by his loving spouse, Josie Reed; daughter, Mary Szymanski Jarvis (William); sons, Daniel Szymanski (Sarah) and Robert Szymanski (Allie); granddaughter, Riley Szymanski; grandsons, Wyatt, Ciarán, and Lennon Jarvis; brother, Mark Szymanski, of Sloan, NY; and brother, Brian Szymanski (Lisa) of Lee, NH. He was predeceased by his father and role model, Leonard Szymanski; and beloved mother, Frances A. Szymanski (nee Jedrzejewski). A Mass in Dave's honor will be held at Saint Francis Catholic Church in Seffner at 10 am, Tuesday, May 21, preceded by visitation with the family beginning at 9 am. Dave will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery immediately following the service. In keeping with Dave's deep concern for those in need, please consider a contribution to Metropolitan Ministries in lieu of flowers.

I met David in 1990 as I was involved in opening a new ad agency based in Tampa. David was a business beat reporter for the Tampa Tribune at the time. Somehow he found us....and what we were planning......when the rest of the world either didn't know or care. He provided our new venture with a great announcement but, more importantly, he became a friend. David was an extraordinary good listener and incredibly kind. God bless David and his family.

Although I knew him from work, I believe anyone who knew Dave considered him a friend. Dave often reported about Committee of One Hundred (now Tampa Bay Economic Development Council) activities. He was an introspective, thoughful reporter who fully respected the power of the written word and how his reporting could affect Tampa's future. He approached his profession with a great deal of passion, intensity and sensitivity which is not to say that he couldn't laugh easily. I am regrettably unable to attend tomorrow's services but send my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Heaven has welcomed a gentle soul!
