David Vickers Obituary

VICKERS, David Grayum, of Tampa, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2008, in his 57th year, after a six-year battle with melanoma. He was born in 1952 in Charleston, W.Va., and moved to Florida in 1954. Grayum was a 1970 graduate of Clearwater High School and attended the University of Florida. He was an Eagle Scout and past scoutmaster of Troop 304 in Tampa. Grayum was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Egypt Temple Shrine in Tampa. A Tampa businessman for many years, he was the owner of Modern Paint in Tampa and Lakeland. Grayum was an unforgettable man, a watcher of the night sky, a fan from season one of both the Bucs and the Rays, and a member of the Tim Moore 4. He was genuinely honest, with a true and generous heart and a unique sense of humor. Predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and William H. Vickers, he is survived and missed by his wife, Laura, sons, Jim and Grayum, brothers, Bill (Debi) of Lakeland and John of Columbus, Ohio, nephews, Joe, Alex, John, Will, John, Rob, Chris and Matt, and his niece, Mary. A memorial service will take place at noon Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, Oldsmar/West Hillsborough Chapel, 6802 Silvermill Drive, Tampa. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Boy Scouts of America, 13228 N. Central Ave., Tampa, FL 33612. Just an update after the memorial service. I tried to return the caulk gun to Modern Paints, but they told me to go ahead and keep it. Consequently, I wrote on it with magic marker "Grayum Vickers Memorial Caulk Gun" and screwed it to the wall in the Berkeley Prep Scene Shop. There it shall remain.
My best to all.

I too went to JFK and Clearwater High with Grayum and saw him a few times after high school and everytime he made me laugh out loud and I loved his sense of humor! I am very, very sorry for the entire families loss.

Laura & Boys,
As my first cousin, my memories of Grayum go back to our youth and summer reunions at maw maw and paw paw's in Charleston. Grayum was always fun to be around then because of his "genuine" personality.
That personality carried through each time that I met up with him in later years. The enitire Vickers family is a great family. I know that you have lost a great husband and father. Bill and John have lost a loving brother. I have lost a cousin, but I have fantastic memories of great man.
God Bless you all,
Frank Floyd Jr.

Dear members of Grayum's family,
We have lost a truly kind and generous neighbor. He never failed to try to help us at Berkeley with a donation of paint or wonderful advice or a funny joke. Seeing Grayum was one of the good things about starting school in the fall. I will miss him. God bless you all.

To The Vickers Family,

My sympathy goes out to you all. I am sorry to hear of the passing of Grayum. We were classmates from JFK J-High & CHS days.
For the last decade, whenever I was in Tampa, I'd make a point to stop and see Grayum at the store. Grayum was a great guy with a brillant mind. His sense of humor was stellar and if you understood where he was coming from, "genius".

I will greatly miss Grayum,
