Doris Jean Smith SWOPE

SWOPE, Doris Jean Smith 82, of Pinellas Park, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013. A native of St. Petersburg, she was born at Mound Park Hospital on Oct. 24, 1930. She attended local schools and was a graduate of St. Petersburg High School, Class of 1948. She was also a St. Petersburg Debutant in 1950. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Florida State University. While at Florida State University, she was a member and past president of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Locally she was a teacher at Lealman Junior High, and a consultant to teachers and students at the Parkland School (now the Richard L. Sanders Exceptional Education Center). Mrs. Swope was secretary of her husbands and her construction business, Florida Classics, Inc., and worked with her husband at Rent-A-Closet until he sold it in 2004. Mrs. Swope was a member of the First United Methodist Church of St. Petersburg, the Junior League of St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg Pi Beta Phi Alumna Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Carlton Lamar Swope Sr.; her parents, James Maurice Smith Sr. and Doris Clemons Smith; and her brother, James Maurice Smith Jr. Mrs. Swope is survived by her loving son, Carlton Lamar Swope Jr. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, Feb. 28th from 1 pm until service time at 2 pm.
