Eugene Provenzano "Gene" CABRERA

CABRERA, Eugene Provenzano "Gene" 86, of Tampa, passed away July 25, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugenio and Marietta Provenzano Cabrera; and sister, Arabia. Born Dec. 31, 1926 in Tampa, he was a graduate of Hillsborough High School and Tampa Business College, a member of the Hillsborough Terrier Big Ten High School Football Championship team of 1944 and a star catcher in Tampa's renowned Intersocial League, playing on many city championship baseball teams from 1945 to 1957. Gene was a devoted husband, father and "Nano" to the end. He considered his children and grandchildren his greatest achievement, always caring and putting his family's happiness first. He was a loyal friend, a passionate fan of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, sports coach and mentor to many youths in Seminole Heights touching many lives in positive ways. Retired from Metropolitan Life where he was named District Salesman of the Year numerous times and a manager, he was recognized in 2012 by the Florida Insurance Commissioner as the longest, active insurance agent in the state and was a member and LUTCF for 63 years at the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Mungiovi Cabrera; children, Jana Cabrera Hill (Gary), Tanly, Brina and Gene C. Cabrera; as well as, grandchildren, Brett Hill (Jacqui), Alexa & Gene A. Cabrera, and Rachel Cloke. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted 3 pm, Tuesday, July 30th, at George M. Steinbrenner Field, at 1 Steinbrenner Dr., Tampa, FL 33614 (corner of Dale Mabry & MLK). . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time.
