Gaius Barrett "Barrie" RICH IV

RICH, Gaius Barrett IV "Barrie" 80, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013 in Branford, CT. Born Aug. 2, 1932 in Lexington, KY to G. Barrett Rich III and Ruth Jenkins, Barrie spent much of his childhood in Cincinnati, OH where his father was a Presbyterian minister. He attended the Walnut High School and then on to Yale University, where he graduated Magna cum Laude with a degree in history in 1954. Immediately following graduation, Barrie was stationed in Germany as an Officer in the U.S. Army. In 1959, he married Marguerite Post. Shortly after the couple moved to Beirut, Lebanon where Barrie had taken a job with Citibank. In 1961 his twin boys, David and Jonathan were born. Later that year the family was transferred to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and then on to Dubai in the Persian Gulf. In 1964, Louise was born and subsequently they lived in six other countries throughout the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent over a period of 30 year. Barrie continued to work for Citibank's Asia Pacific Division establishing and running banks in eight different countries. After his retirement as a Senior Vice President in 1987, Barrie and Marguerite split their time between Tampa, where he actively volunteered for Tampa General Hospital; Quogue, NY, a home which had served as home base throughout his overseas career and where the family were members of the Field, Yacht, and Beach clubs, and St. John, USVI. In his spare time Barrie, a dedicated Yale alumnus, history buff, and avid genealogist spent much of his time traveling, writing notes as class secretary and organizing reunions, and researching his friends' and family's lineages. Having visited over 100 countries throughout his career and travels, Barrie was a proud member of the Travelers Century Club. Marguerite and Barrie shared this global passion with their twin granddaughters, Katherine and Elizabeth, traveling each summer on an Elderhostel trip, which took them across Europe and Latin America. Barrie fought a courageous fight against cancer and passed away surrounded by loved ones. Survived by his sons, David and Jonathan; daughter, Louise; and four granddaughters, Katherine, Elizabeth, Olivia and Sabrina. A Memorial Service will be conducted in Quogue, NY this summer.
