Our mother Geneva Smith Wooten grew up in poverty. She pushed all three of her children to do well at school, and impressed on us the importance of education as the "ticket" to avoid the deprivations of poverty. As a child of the Great Depression, she also taught us how to "stretch" a dollar. For these things I am grateful.

One of the greatest gifts our mother Geneva Wooten gave to her 3 children was the gift of appreciation for education, and the knowledge that my father's college education was what allowed our family to live in safe neighborhoods and have plenty of food to eat. Having grown up in poverty, her fervent wish for her children was that they attend good schools and pursue education beyond high school so that we would never have to suffer the poverty that she had endured as a child. Thank you, Mom.

Thank you, Bill. Mom was blessed to have a long and mostly healthy life, and thanks to the wonderful Hospice nurses and aides, she had the most peaceful end of life possible.
