George WITT Obituary

WITT, George M.

went home to be with the Lord on May 23, 2016. George was born on Sept. 17, 1951 in Columbus, MS. After attending Memphis State and moving to the Tampa area, George became a long-time member of Idlewild Baptist Church, where he enjoyed working with college students and young married couples. Following a brief retirement from a 30 year career in sales, George took on the role of Multi-Area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Under his leadership the ministry grew from one staff member to 19, and now has a presence in almost every high school and numerous middle schools in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. George loved to study God's Word and to share Christ with others. George is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy, and four grandchildren; Emma, Molly, Jackson, and Ava. He is preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Francis Witt of Memphis, TN, and his sons, Matthew and Daniel. There will be a visitation from 5:30-8:00 pm on Thursday, May 26 at Idlewild Baptist Church, 18333 Exciting Idlewild Blvd, Lutz, 33548. The funeral service will take place on Friday the 27 at 11 am, with visitation beginning at 10 am. The graveside service will be for family only. Special thanks to Melech House Hospice Care, and all of those who have prayed for George and the Witt family throughout this ordeal. In lieu of flowers, George requested that donations be made to the Witt Camp Fund benefiting coaches and students involved in FCA.

George and I became friends many years ago because of baseball at Northside LL, where both our sons played as well as us coaching our sons together. I now live in Seattle but have found, at times, myself reflecting on those past days and what a dedicated Christian George was. I am glad and blessed to have had him as a friend. Blessings to his family.

It is with great sadness, on the passing of Mr. Witt. I have known some great godly men I my life, but Mr. Witt was almost like a second father figure. 2011 was a trying year with my daughter born extremely premature and my mom passing all in the span of 5 months. Not sure how I would have handled it all had I not had such great counsel as from Mr. Witt. You will always have a special place in my heart.

My prayers are with Ms. Nancy and family. I am honored to have known George and am glad that I know where he is and that I will see him again. George would want everyone that reads this or attends his home going service to have the opportunity to make the same decision he made to accept Christ as Savior and Lord. If you don't know how, I would be happy to share with you.

George your time here has been spent as a significant inspiration to all and as promised we are committed to carrying the torch you lit supporting FCA bringing our youth to Christ as was your legacy and humble passion. God rest your soul as he has called a great man to join him at his side and to meet back up together with his sons, Your presence here will be truly missed and our prayers will be with Nancy supporting her as she begins the next chapter in her life finishing her work serving the Lord and all of the great work that you together have created.

Blessings Always
