Henry Bohler Obituary

TAMPA - Visitation will be Friday evening for Henry Bohler, a Tampa resident and former member of the Tuskegee Airmen who died Saturday. He was 82.

Bohler was one of the youngest members of the famous group of black fighter pilots during World War II, beginning his training at age 17, immediately out of high school.

Growing up near Augusta, Ga., he nurtured an early love for flying, taking odd jobs around an airport as a boy.

Bohler moved to Tampa in 1950.

A family visitation will be at Wilson Funeral Home, 3000 N. 29th St. in Tampa.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 13312 Cain Road in Tampa.

Henry was a pioneer for all of us,paving the way for other young Americans to follow their dreams. We as Black Americans will always keep him in our memory. America owe a debt of gratitude to him and his fellow fighters for their bravery, skills, and overcoming such obstacles just to prove their abilities.May the God who gave him the talent and ability to do what he did,now give to the family the comfort they need to cope with his lost.(2Corinthians 1:2-7)

I know this young fearless face so well as an Alabamian. Reading these comments about Mr. Bohler makes me wish I had met him somewhere along the way. What a great American. What a trailblazer. It seems another Icon and National Treasure has slipped away from us. A moving song tells us that if you can dream, your soul can fly. I know Henry Bohler's soul is flying high.

Henry read "High Flight" at our wedding, and then added his own special surprise poem just for us. We will treasure that memory as well as the honor of flying right seat with him - what an experience! Henry, you have now "slipped the surly bonds of earth", and the trials of the last many months. All of us in Ye Mystic AirKrewe miss you terribly, but we know now you're probably helping teach the angels to fly! we know you've "reached out and touched the face of God." Clifford and family, let us know how we can help.

TUSKEGEE AIRMAN. FAMILY MAN. BUSINESSMAN. COMMUNITY ACTIVIST. It's a bitter-sweet time, for sure, but Henry Bohler's journey is complete and he can now catch the last flight HOME. Henry Bohler's life was well-lived and he was well-loved. We should all aspire to live such a full and distinguished life.

Henry was a good friend of mine. We worked together many years. A noble man, yet he could give and take a joke with the best. I am glad I got to shake his hand and hug him a few years ago when he and his wife were at the Sun n' Fun Fly-In. I went just to see him. May God comfort and richly bless his family.

Mr. Henry Bohler is a Bona Fide American Hero, pioneer and Leader. He has personified those exemplary characteristics in his pursuit for equality not only for his country but for his community and family as well. I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Bohler and he provided me with invaluable insight and advice that was always tempered with spirituality. His autographed pictures are framed and displayed proudly in my office and have been since I received them. We adopted each other years ago, I called him my Godfather, he called me his friend. To the Bohler family, I love you all and may God continue to bless and keep you forever.

I have always been a great admire of the Tuskeegee Airmen and have spoke about them often to my daughters. I wanted to attend the tribute for them at HCC but was unable to attend. I understand that Mr Bohler was to attend. I am saddened by the fact I will never get to meet him. But at the same time his accomplishments to this community, our race and the airforce will live on for generations to come. Mrs. Bohler God Bless You and your family in your hour of need. May the Lord continue to walk with you. Mr Bohler may you continue to soar into the heavens watching over us.
