Hugh Smith Obituary

Longtime WTVT anchorman Hugh Smith died Sunday at Palms of Pasadena Hospital of cancer. He was 73. The pioneering local newsman worked at Channel 13 for 28 years, and while there he anchored Tampa's first color broadcast of a newscast in 1966. In 1976, he did Tampa's first live remote shot, reporting from a helicopter hovering over town. He also was instrumental in expanding WTVT's newcasts from 15-minute reports to 30 minutes and eventually to 60 minutes.

Ward, I just read your new entry about your father. I was thinking yesterday that it would be a year since his death. I worked with Hugh on the Minnesota Daily. He appointed me associate editor when he was editor-in-chief. I kept in contact with him for awhile and then lost contact until just a couple of years before his death. He had a stellar career as a newsman, and will be fondly remembered by many who knew him and worked with him.

It's been a year since you passed and not a day goes by that I don't miss our visits, laughs;time with the grand kids and cheeseburgers. I use your coffee cup and wear you Nautica jacket everyday.
It's not the same without you.

During the early 1970s I worked at WTVT as a news stringer covering Pasco County. Hugh Smith was always very patient with this then-young woman. At the time I started my stint with WTVT, I was clueless about the world of broadcast news. Hugh was a great help, and always very patient with me. I worked most closely with Jule McGee, but Hugh was always available to answer any question I might have or to give guidance when needed. He taught me much about professionalism, just by example.

I had the honor of working with Hugh at MIX 96 as well as a few years prior when he and son Ward made guest appearances on the Q Morning Zoo. To say I learned a lot from Hugh is a huge understatement. He was there for me in the newsroom and as a loyal friend. He never lost his razor-sharp wit or sensitivity to people and animals. He made an impact on me and obviously many others in the community and the broadcasting profession: he was the 'real thing'--a consummate pro--and a dear friend who is deeply missed.

Hugh was the consummate newsman; he shows up for work at 3 a.m and he's in coat and tie. To do a newsbreak at 5:30 a.m.! It took awhile before we got him to get in there in his shirt sleeves. He didn't like to ad lib so much...he was very much about the preparation. We treated him with respect and he did a great job for us.

Hugh was really a man of record for the city and many people including public officials looked at him that way, and he well deserved it.

When he walked into the door of this station, when he was on duty, he was all business. He was the public's advocate in every way.
He was the most dedicated reporter that I've ever worked with.

I remember as a 4th grader calling Hugh Smith to invite him to Pinellas County's Writers' Camp, a summer program sponsored by the Poynter Institute. He answered the phone, treated me like an adult, accepted the invitation, and impressed a number of young people striving to improve their journalism and writing skills. Always professional and humble, Hugh is deeply missed. May he rest in peace.

When I came to Fox 13 20 years ago... Hugh Smith was a strong force in our newsroom. He anchored the main newscasts had a strong hand in the editorial direction of our station. I remember giving him my scripts when I was a young reporter and being so afraid that he wouldn't think they were any good. He was meticulous in everything he did, from ripping scripts to clearing the wires. Tonight I think about his family and remember Hugh with such positive memories. He was the consumate journalist and I feel very blessed to say I knew him.

Hugh Smith was THE BEST! Pulse News with Hugh Smith, Roy Leep and Andy Hardy was the best newscast ever. No broadcast of today can even come close to the quality and integrity of that team on Pulse News.

Heaven has a new news anchor tonight, Hugh Smith.

Hugh was a great influence in how I approched news reporting and producing.

He was all about the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

What I will always remember is our daily chats in his office about politics, life, and his beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He was the the Bay area's Edward R. Murrow.

Hugh...I will always miss you. You were my mentor. The person I learned integrity and true journalism from. No one can ever take that away.
On a broader note, your were a dependable, night in and night out "anchor" for the Tampa Bay area.
Wether it was the indictment of the Pinellas County Comisssion, or the indictment of former State Attorney E.J. Salcines or the contoversy surrounding the Scientologists in Clearwater you were there to report the facts as we knew them.
You will be missed by this reporter and hundreds of thousands of other people who call this beautiful place home.
My prayers go out to your loved ones and close friends.

Most Sincerely,

John Paul Jones former WTVT reporter

The news of Hugh's death comes as a shock to me. He was mentor and a key figure in my professional life.

Hugh was the best copy editor ethical news manager I worked under. On the downside he was a workaholic and that made family life difficult for those in the newsroom. How could we complain about workload when he was news director, anchor, and continued to work the Hillsborough County education beat. He would go to the office 7 days a week. Tampa Bay TV news viewers were better informed because of his efforts.

I was disappointed when Hugh didn't make it to the WTVT 50th Anniversary employee reunion a few years ago. Apparently he did not know how much we all cared about him and respected his professional life. We wanted him to be there to share in the celebration of his accomplishments as much as the station's.

I didn't know he was ill and it saddens me, and I will always regret, that I never got to visit him after he left WTVT.

My thoughts of comfort go to Hugh's family in this time of sorrow.

May he rest in peace.

Ward,

Please convey to your siblings, my profound sympathy and sadness at the passing of your dad. Hugh and I were both Preacher’s Kids, (PKs) and this designation provided an opportunity for off-camera, non-work conversations. It provided a glimpse into his private side that he guarded. In some respects, I suppose all of us who revered the man as a boss, secretly wished we could have known him as only children can. I remember every time a WTVT employee brought a new baby into the office, Hugh melted.

Thank you for letting me visit with him. The time spent at his bedside brought back years of memories, gratitude and personal reflection. In his own way, he provided a guiding hand for the growth and development of Tampa during his years in TV & radio. I will be forever touched by his influence.

Your dad was the best boss I ever had and was the most professional of any newsman I have ever known. He was a great influence on me it was a great privilege to have learned from him, was a great man.

January 7, 2008

Ward, I have put together a lot of OBITS about friends and colleagues but none has been so distressing as the one about your Father.
I'll never forget how kind he was to me in San Francisco at the Democratic National Convention....we had a wonderful chat and I am so thankful for the opportunity to go visit him in his last days. He had a peace about him that was amazing. And I got a little smile when I sat down beside him and grasped his hand...his head never moved nor did his eyes 'flinch', until I said "Hugh, this is your friend John Wilson in your ear...and many people you have touched over the years would like to be here with you because you have meant so much to all of us...." He gave a little smile, was too weak to turn his head but his eyes did 'flicker' for a moment...and I had the sense he knew a friend was beside him...

I trust you will all work this as best you can, but you will have the great joy of knowing he was respected as a Great Man, a Professional's PROFESSIONAL ON THE AIR and a man who created some very high standards for television that is so lacking today.

My best to you and your family, from Mary K., Mark and Paul and the day I visited your Dad, I called Patrick and told him the END was near and he had the saddest look on his face AND said, "OH NO..I AM SO SORRY...." Patrick remembered him well....he was on Television when we moved here...and we will never forget him.

Hello Ward,

I was the last person your Dad hired when he was News Director. I produced his (and I really mean "his") 6pm Newscast for several years and we covered the State Legislature and National Political Conventions together. I loved him. He taught me how to be a news person. He taught me the value of research which I still use to this day as a free-lance producer.

I just wanted you to know I am among the legions of humans who will be forever grateful and who will forever miss your Dad.

I am so grateful that I found out about his illness in time to go and spend time with him and tell him exactly how much he meant to me on the Friday before he passed-away. He didn't respond verbally, but his facial expressions let me know he heard everything I said to him.

I pray for you and your family in this most heartwrenching time of your lives.

Smith Kids,

Your father's death was a great blow to me (as well as others). Frankly, I didn't realize just how much his friendship meant to me personally until he passed. I am now aware of how much love and respect he had professionally from his Tampa Bay viewers. His loss has put a big hole in my life that will be long in healing. He was just so much a part of my life for such a long time. It's difficult for me to even understand my reaction. He was a very special man. Sometimes you have no idea of the depth of a bond until something happens.

I never attend funerals. My mother's, on November 16, 1960 after her death when I was 13, I think was about the last. Your father's death was the very first since then where I felt an overwhelming need for a memorial service for my own benefit. I never felt that before. I'm ashamed for my selfishness and know your family needed privacy. I'm also very sure your dad wanted it that way too.

Above all, I am saddened beyond measure that your father had no realization of the great regard the people of Tampa Bay had for him and how his passing affected so many.

Please feel free to contact me anytime. Working through such a loss takes a lot of time and many good friends and you can consider me one of them!

Ward,

While you and I never met, I had the pleasure of working with your dad for a number of years when I was at 'TVT back in the 80's. He was an icon. A real force in the newsroom. As tough as he was sometimes, I always felt he was trying to make all of us better at our craft. I suspect he was much the same at home. As you know, despite any personal issues, he was a real pro. I'm sure his loss is being felt by many.

I lost my mom last June, so I personally can identify with how you're all feeling.

My heart goes out to you. While I doubt I'll be able to make it down for a memorial, I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Heal well.

Ward,
Through the past 9 years we have exchanged letters, pictures, laughs and of course spoken to each other. My family was lucky enough to share a couple of memorable days with you a few years ago.
We didn't get the chance to meet Hugh, I understood from talking to you he was a good father, a good man and, awesome grandfather.
He raised a loving, caring and honorable son. For this he has my respect and gratitude.
Our condolences to you, your sons, also Grant, karen and their families.
You all are in our prayers.

More than 50 years ago Hugh and I were classmates in the School of Journalism at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. We both worked on the news staff of the Minnesota Daily, student newspaper at the University. Hugh was elected editor-in-chief for the 1955-56 academic year, and he appointed me as his associate editor. I kept in touch with him and Joan and then lost track of them, although I did learn at some point that he was the top anchor in the Tampa area. I reconnected with Hugh a couple of years ago and corresponded with him then. He told me about his three grown children and five grandchildren. Recently I have been thinking of Hugh, and decided to Google his name. Lo and behold, I found out that he had just died. I am saddened to learn of this, and extend my condolences to his family and to all who knew and loved Hugh. Memory eternal!

Hi Hugh,
Am so very sorry that I did not visit you these many years. That will teach me to put things off!
I worked with you many a day at '13 and it was always a pleasure to try to match wits with you (you always won). You tried to be serious but I knew that underneath there was a very kind friend.
I wish you were here to help me find the words to express my sadness. Am not a writer like you.
God has blessed me with some great friends in my life ...you were among those.
I wish you much peace in your new life.
God bless you, Hugh
You will always be a very fond memory. Bye bye for now.

Hugh Smith and I put together the 11 p.m. news for Pulse News in his first years with the station. He was a model for every journalist, and gave a full day's work every day. He was one of the best co-workers I have ever worked with. Peace be with you, Hugh.

Hugh Smith, one of the hardest working broadcast professionals in the Tampa Bay area, will be fondly remembered and certainly be missed. We respected his word and trusted his voice. He gave our area importance with his national quality on-air presence and made us feel good about living here. We had the pleasure of meeting him several times over the years at various media functions and after his TV career was over, Lisa worked with him at Mix 96 where he was always, always the first one to arrive in the morning to get to work. She was proud of his professionalism and dedication as his broadcast career was winding down. I also had the joy of working with his son Ward in the creative department of FKQ Advertising, where I heard great stories about growing up with Hugh.

Our deepest condolences to Ward and the boys and the rest of the Smith family. We are happy to have known Hugh. God Bless.

I first met Hugh as a young WTVT news stringer in March, 1965. We remained friends since, even though I spend many years at WFLA before returning to Big13.

He was always fair but demanded the highest of ethics and journalistic ability. If you lacked the ability, he helped you get it. If you lacked the capacity you were out the door...but remained his friend.

Not many people knew him well. Despite many long conversations with him in the last 15 years, I can't say I ever had him pegged.

He was a great guy and broadcaster. I'm guessing he'll be back after some messages.

I was one of the very priveleged who had the opportunity to work at Big13 in the day of Hugh Smith, Kelly Craig, Andy Hardy and Danny Harmon. Every day was a joy. The first time I met Mr. Smith, he came off as a big gruff grizzly bear. In time I learned to know him much better and his dry sense of humor was always a surprise if you'd only seen his serious on-air presence. My sympathies to the family, but know that the ratings will soar in Heaven's next Arbitron ratings season. Peace Mr. Smith.

During the fourteen years I served in the Florida House of Representatives (1967-1980) I had the opportunity on many occasions to meet and talk with Hugh Smith. I knew two Hugh Smith's. The total professional news man that gave no quarter in interviewing me and asking some of the toughest questions of any news person.
The other Hugh Smith was a true and trusted friend. Honest, quick witted and a person I could always count on to give me sound political advice.
After Hugh left Big 13 and I left the Legislature we lost track of each other. About a year ago we had lunch together in St. Pete and renewed old times. I am so grateful we had a chance to visit for almost three hours. He was the same old Hugh, very warm, friendly and in great spirit. I shall truly miss you. He was the BEST.
My deepest condolences to the Smith family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I had the privilege of working with Hugh during my tenure on-air at Mix 96. I was the overnight (12midnight-6am) DJ there for several years. Hugh would always arrive hours ahead of time for his 6am newcast to prepare and polish his presentation.
