Ivor D. Groves Jr.

GROVES, Ivor D. Jr., 88, of Brandon, Fla., died September 2, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie; his son, Dr. Ivor D. Groves and wife, Lynn of Tallahassee, Fla.,; daughters, Carol Noland and husband, Richard of Valrico, Fla., and Gail Wolven of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren, Shannon Tremel, Brian Noland, Sarah Groves, Laura Groves, Joshua Gabriel, Jennifer Gabriel and Rachel Wolven; and two great-grandchildren, Grace Noland and Rylee Tremel. Mr. Groves, a native of Kentucky, came to Tampa in 1925 and was a 1938 graduate of Hillsborough High School. He was a graduate of Rollins College and in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a physicist at the Oak Ridge National Lab and worked for 28 years at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab in Orlando, Fla. He published many technical papers and edited the book, Acoustic Transducers. In 1974, he presented a paper in London, England, at the eighth International Congress on Acoustics. Ivor was an amateur radio operator for many years with the call sign W4DRX. He loved the Lord and was active in his Baptist denomination. Since returning to Tampa he had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Brandon. The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2008, at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4207 E. Lake Ave., Tampa, with services following in the chapel at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church of Brandon, in memory of Ivor Groves.
