J. Jacques Obituary

JACQUES, Col. J. Peter, U. S. Army (Retired), 87, of Spring Hill, Fla., died June 19, 2009, as the result of a fall while visiting family in Lynchburg, Va. Born January 27, 1922, in Bayfield, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward R. and Fidelina T. Jacques. He grew up in Durango, Colo. and graduated from Durango High School in 1940, and was attending Regis College in Denver, Colo. when World War II began. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific with the 9th Marine Infantry Regiment from 1942 to 1946. He returned to college and was awarded a bachelor of science degree from UCLA in 1948. He joined the U.S. Army in 1949, and served his country for the next 24 ½ years as a Quartermaster Officer. His overseas assignments took him to Germany, Japan, the Panama Canal Zone, Italy and Vietnam. He served in various positions at Fort Lee, Va.; Logan and Ogden, Utah; and Natick Laboratories in Massachusetts. He received a master of science degree in commerce and business administration from The University of Alabama in 1957 and graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in 1961. He served as the commander of the 4th S&T Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, in Vietnam, from 1966 to 1967. He retired August 31, 1973, after serving as Deputy Commandant for Training and Education at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Va. Among his many awards are the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and Army Commendation Medal. Following retirement, he assumed the position of Assistant Vice President and Manager of the Fort Lee, Va., branch of United Virginia Bank (now Sun Trust) where he served for 10 years. He and his wife, Shirley began traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico in 1984, spending 12 years in Olympia, Wash., where he served as president of the Washington Unit of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, Inc., the recreational vehicle club of Airstream owners. They moved to Spring Hill, Fla., in 2000. He was a member of the West Central Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. He was Catholic by faith and attended St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Spring Hill. He enjoyed boating, fishing, golf and raising his Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, Stephen (Karen) of Seattle, Wash.; Paige (Liz) of Boulder, Colo.; Todd of Park City, Utah; three daughters, Jacquelyn Hyden of Chesterfield, Va.; Stacey Jacques of Aurora, Colo.; and Tamara (Phil) Brimer of Lynchburg, Va.; four grandsons, Brett and Lorne Hyden of Chesterfield, Va.; Daniel Bost of Lynchburg, Va. and Addison Jacques of Aurora, Colo.; a granddaughter, Alexis Reed of Aurora, Colo.; stepgrandchildren, Adam Brimer of Birmingham, Ala. and Emily Brimer of Fredericksburg, Va.; and numerous cousins and friends. Contributions in his memory may be made to support military families at Fisher House at the James A. Haley VA Hospital, 13000 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa, FL 33612. Arrangements were handled by Whitten Funeral Homes, Inc., in Lynchburg, Va. A memorial service and internment will take place at a later date at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. Arrangements will be handled by the National Cremation Society, Hudson, Fla. (727) 847-4745.

Mrs. Jacques, On behalf of SunTrust Bank (formerly United Virginia Bank) our sincere sympathy in the passing of Pete. I did not work directly in the office with him - but did share United Virginia events with him. Clients still ask about him as I now work at the Fort Lee Office of SunTrust.
