I am extremely saddened by the death of this dedicated, honest, passionate and very effective Florida Senator. She was an advocate for so many issues that it would be impossible to list them all, but as a tribute to her life, I will list some that affect the lives of many Floridians.
She was responsible for many laws relating to health: the Clean Indoor Air Act banning smoking in public places; patients Bill Of Rights; Good Samaritan Act which protects Doctors from liability when they volunteer their services to free clinics; revised and improved the Adult Protective Services Act thus better protecting the elderly and disabled adults; allowing terminally ill patients to have life support systems terminated if so requested in their Living Will; and requiring nursing homes to provide financial disclosure.
For the environment she: created the Tampa Bay Management Agency to coordinate efforts to restore Tampa Bay; mandated that fines from pollution violations be returned to the area where the pollution occurred so they could be used for restoration; created the Radon Protection Program which set testing standards and required testing schools for this deadly gas; created the Workers Right to Know Law requiring employers to notify workers of workplace chemical hazards and to implement safety programs; and established procedures for reporting Toxic chemical accidents.
For consumers, law enforcement and workers, she passed laws: providing penalties for misleading advertising including a mechanism for policing misleading advertising of medigap insurance; requiring convicted criminals to pay fines which would go towards paying for the criminal court system; allowing code enforcement officers to issue citations; providing better assistance to crime victims and witnesses; allowing police to take sworn statements at crime scenes; and protecting "Whistleblowers" from retaliation from their employers.
Senator Malchon was a strong supporter of public education. She started the first student internship program for college political science majors to work and learn in her Tallahassee Senate office and high school students to intern in the District office.
She also worked to protect and provide services for families, women and children. There are many more people, professions, agencies, etc. that have benefitted as a result of her years of public service.
It was an honor to work as a Legislative Assistant for Sen. Jeanne Malchon, a very bright, hardworking woman of high moral character and ethics. My thoughts are with her grieving family who I hope are comforted by knowing that she will also be missed by those who knew and worked with her.

Having worked on her first reelection campaign in 1986, I can tell you that Jeanne was a passionate fighter, who never let grass grow under her feet. She loved the people of St Pete and they loved her. She brought a style and focused energy that is sometimes missing in Tallahassee today. I'm better for having known her.

It was with great surprise and sadness to learn of Jeanne Malchon's death as I was perusing the obits in this morning's paper. When I first moved to Florida over 20 years ago, she was working on a state "bottle bill" which sadly was never implemented. Those efforts had a huge influence on me then and now. She surely will be missed.

Jeanne was a great advocate for many diferent causes. Just one of her efforts led to passing legislation to assist runaway, homeless and troubled youth get help and support through safe shelters around the State of Florida. Counseling is also available to families in a relationship crisis with their teenage children. She was an incredible champion for many important issues of her time and was recognized through many awards for her achivements over her lifetime. She will be deeply missed by all her friends.

Thank you for your dedicated service to our beautiful state. I will think of you every time I can breath peacefully in public places. Rest in peace. You have truly earned it but being a great role model to young women.
