Joan Tallis Obituary

TALLIS, Joan Elizabeth, a resident of Tampa since 1963, died May 17, 2004 at LifePath Hospice House in Sun City Center, Fla., after more than a two year battle with cancer. She was born June 6, 1937 in Rochester, N.Y. After graduation from Watkins Glen Central School, N.Y., she earned a BS in Music Education from State University of New York at Fredonia, and a M.S. in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from Syracuse University. In 1963 she assumed the position of Resident Instructor in U.S.F.'s Department of Housing working up to Area Coordinator, Assistant Director of Housing and Food Services, Associate Director, Interim Director, and finally to Director of the Department of Residence Halls until her retirement in 1997. She served many years on the Board of Directors of the U.S.F.F. Credit Union (1992-2004). She held important positions as President, Conference Chair and Liaison with many professional organizations, A.C.U.H.O-I, A.C.E.D.-I, and F.A.W.D.A.C. Her U.S.F. rel ated activities are too numerous to list, but she served willingly on many councils and committees during her 34 years with U.S.F. Preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Amie Cole Tallis, Joan is survived by her cherished and loving companion, JoAnne Young of Temple Terrace; her sister, Patricia and husband Jack May of Burdett, N.Y.; loving nieces, Angela Armbruster, Toni Green, and Teresa Pennington; loving nephew, Michael Trippi; two great- nephews, and five great-nieces. Joan had a tremendous love for family and friends, an overwhelming will to live and a strong devotion to friends and family all over the U.S., England, and Australia -too numerous to list. A memorial service will be held June 8 at 3 p.m. at Marshall Center on the U.S.F. Campus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local LifePath Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. The LifePath Hospice address is 3010 W.
