JOHN FREELAND Obituary

FREELAND, John C., 91, of Sebring, Fla., passed away Friday, July 12, 2011. He was born January 31, 1920, in Maryville, Tenn., to John Jennings and Maude (Smith) Freeland. After graduating from Sebring High School, he left Sebring to play minor league baseball, joined the military and served with the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He then went back to baseball, where he met his wife and the mother of his children, Shirley B. Freeland, and then went to college where he graduated with a bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College, and received his master's degree from Florida Atlantic University. Coach Freeland returned to his home town and Alma Mater to raise his family and his students. The rest is pretty much history. He was a teacher and coach for 30 plus years, retiring from the Highlands County School Board as principal of Sebring High School in 1986. He was awarded the Florida High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1972, was a member of the Sebring Fireman, Inc., past director of Teen Town, member of First Presbyterian Church of Sebring, and had been a lifelong resident of Sebring. "It was all a matter of pride to Coach. His life revolved around how proud and positive he felt about family and career. He was a leader and a man of sterling character. It all started in 1920 and 91 years later, we still celebrate all those proud and good things. There are many a tale of Coach Freeland roaming the halls constantly moving to stay ahead of the pack. One of the quotes he was famous for is 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.'" He is survived by his daughters, Susan Dalrymple (Jim) of Marathon, Fla., and Kathy L. Martin (Rick) of Guntersville, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Linda Freeland of Sebring; sons, Robert Freeland (Missy) of Sebring, and Eddie Freeland of Lakeland; 10 grand-children; and 4 great- grand-children. He was preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his children, Shirley B. Freeland; son, John W. Freeland; and also his second wife, Veronica Freeland. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church of Sebring, with the Rev. Darrell Peer officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sebring Fireman, Inc. Memorial Fund or the First Presbyterian Church Elder Care Program. Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home Sebring, Fla. stephensonnelsonfh.com

With sincere sympathy to the Freeland family. You may not remember me but my Mother and I visited with John and Veronica around 7 years ago and met up with many of you. Veronica Freeland was my Aunt.

I offer deep condolences from a unique position. I, too, knew John Freeland from SHS. But before that, I also knew him as my Uncle Johnny, brother to my mother. As my baseball coach I offer the family my sympathy and hope for the best. As my Uncle and being part of the family I feel the loss of the last of his generation in my family. He will be missed but his legacy remains in my cousins and second cousins. They were fortunate to have him as a father and grandfather. May he rest in peace.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
