Dr Malone was the best endocrinologist out there..I was lucky enough to have him for an endo when I was diagnosed at age 14...I am now 30. He was a great and caring doctor and person. A few years after he retired I ended up in a coma due to diabetic complications and even though he had been retired and I was no longer his patient he still went out of his way to visit me in the hospital. He was a great man and he will definitely be missed.

My condolences to all Dr Malone family. I was 13 years old when I met him. He told my mom she did not need to way my food. I was so happy. When I was 18 he said I needed another endo. So sad. I caught up with him again at Johns Hopkins in Sarasoto years later. He asked me to talk to some of his young diabetics. I am now 64. Again, I am sending my condolences to family and friends.

I am so very sad to learn that our sweet Dr Malone passed away! We met him in 1998 when my son Jonathan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 22 months. Dr Malone was the most caring physician and we were so blessed that he was our sons doctor for so many years. We were sad to lose him when he had gotten really sick and then thrilled when he was able to come back for several more years before retiring. We will always cherish our memories of the many diabetes camps we attended with him! He genuinely cared about his patients and what was going on in their lives. He took his time at each appointment to answer all questions and we NEVER felt rushed that he needed to get to the next patient. Even after his retirement we would ask about him and were thrilled when we would run into him on occasion. He truly was a special man who will be dearly missed! Our sincere sympathies to his family and friends. Wish we would have known about his service cause we would have attended.

I was so fortunate to have been able to work with Dr. Malone. He was a wonderful physician and the most caring and generous individual. He made a difference in so many lives. He contributed so much to research on Type 1 and was so intelligent but remained so humble and down to earth. He always had a twinkle in his eye and great sense of humor!

Having Diabetes can be a challenging task for just about anyone. Almost 40 years later from the onset, I am forever grateful for having been associated with the DCCT/EDIC Study. To say it saved my life would be an understatement of fact.
Dr. Malone was a "Peach" of a guy and will be missed by our whole Study group I am sure. He made a real impact on my treatment, had a great bedside manner and was always interested in hearing how things were going for you. Kind of a father figure, and just great to talk to.
Our condolences to his friends and family for this loss. Wishing he could have been with us for longer, but even Heaven needs a good Doc from time to time. Respectfully, Jim Davis - # 192 :)

SOME FRIENDS ARE FOREVER
Sometimes in life you meet special friends. Friends who change your life by being part of it. Friends who make you believe that there really is good in the world. This is a "forever friendship".
My late husband Doug and I met John and Gloria when we moved to Temple Terrace in 1977. Our lives paralleled each others. Doug joined the U.S.F. Medical School Faculty, our families were both members of T.T. Presbyterian Church, our children attended the same schools. We became instant "forever friends". Even after we moved to Sarasota, our "forever friendship" continued. God blessed our families with our special relationship and I will be forever grateful. Until we meet again....we remain "forever friends". Maxine Perry and family

Dr. Malone was never too busy to do a "curbside consult" with a pediatrician. He was a very smart and kind physician who really loved his work. I was always grateful when I was able to chat with him.

Good friend and academic colleague. Great skills as a physician who related
very well to his patients and their families. A most notable quality was his ability to be a "patient" as well as a physician. His profession will miss his contributions.

Dr. Malone and I were residents together at CHOP in Philadelphia and both grads of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, followed in 1972 coming together to the fledgling USF School of Medicine with Dr. Lew Barness and Dr. Jim Hallock. John and Gloria were wonderful people and we are the richer for having known him with his sense of humor and that Irish talent of making short stories long.... May you rest in peace; we are all the richer as you touched our lives.

I met John Malone in 1977. He was my boss, mentor, and friend over the next 10 years while I worked in his lab at USF Medical School-Department of Pediatrics. He changed my life. That much I know for certain. I am not sure I have ever met a kinder, more wonderful human being in my 71 years on earth. May you rest in eternal light, my friend. I am a lucky man to have known you.

From the early days of medical school, followed by becoming his 1st Diabetes & Endocrinology fellow, after which he encouraged me to work with him at USF, John was a role model, mentor, and dear friend. The world of medicine was much the better during his tenure.
